Yes well, the X Factor cover of Miley Cyrus's "The Climb" also appears to have propelled Miley Cyrus back to the listings. Who knows what gets into people's heads. I don't suppose we should be surprised that SuBo has done nothing for the sales of either Gram Parsons or the Rolling Stones.

There was a concerted Facebook campaign to get music lovers to download the Rage track (at 29p a time, about 20c) and deliberately halt the apparently inexorable rise to No. One of the X Factor thingy. There were cynics among us who noted that both tracks belonged to Sony Records, who therefore found themselves in a win-win situation, but all the same, it was a legitimate blow against the hegemony of Simon Cowell, who did not even have the good grace to see the funny side. First I realised the Rage campaign was going to succeed was when I mentioned the campaign to Martin McDonagh on Thursday evening when we were at the theatre together. He knew about it and casually informed me he had just downloaded the Rage track that day. This was no Oasis v Blur hype, it was a legitimate people-led blow against Cowell-processed dross. A rage against The Machine, even.

In the process, I heard the Rage track for only the first time, knowingly at least, and was delighted to find I really liked it. Objectively, the X Factor single is just sludge.

Living in the US and being a fan of "alternative" radio, I can't imagine hearing that song for the first time (again). It is pretty good. Great swagger.

Brief excerpt from Zach's (de la Rocha - Rage's singer) Wikipedia enrty:

De la Rocha's father, Roberto "Beto" de la Rocha, played an integral part in his son's cultural upbringing. Beto was a muralist and member of Los Four — the first Chicano art collective to be exhibited at a museum (LACMA, 1973). De la Rocha's grandfather was a Sinaloan revolutionary who fought in the Mexican Revolution and an agricultural laborer in the US. Well done to the Band - no 12 - up 6 since last week! FONY doesn't seem to have much air play this year still it's great to see the song well into in the top 20. Really enjoyed the show at Brixton last Saturday, you boys get better each year, thank you all for the wonderful music, very pleased to hear Lullaby of London and all my other favourites. Would be great if there was a show in the UK or Ireland during the Spring or Summer.
