John McCormack Anyone?

Post Sat Oct 08, 2005 12:02 am

Has anyone heard of the old Irish tenor John McCormack?

He came around the time Enrico Caruso was popular(Caruso considered McCormack the best singer he had ever heard) Caruso even praised that McCormack could sing better in italian then he could and McCormack was a pure bred Irishman and not an italian. His career started out winning a contest in Dublin and traveling to Italy to study with the great Giuseppe Verdi. He was a very political singer when he started out like singing irish rebellion songs like 'the wearin of the green' and many others but after his career progressed he moved on to more formal recording but he always kept his love for Irish music. In 1917 or 1919 he became an American citizen in which he enjoyed greatly but he kept a home in Ireland and visited it very often.

Here is 2 pictures of this Irish legend

Here is some sample clips from his songs...

Give the music a chance and trust me this music will be addicting , It's that great.

P.S. listen to 'When Irish Eyes Are Smiling' first.

Hence of course the first line of "Sickbed...": "McCormack and Richard Tauber..." (Tauber being another tenor, though not Irish... Austrian, I think).

They're those annoying clips of "popular" songs you hear when people's mobiles ring.
“An’ this is the last of Brummy,” he said, leaning on his spade and looking away over the tops of the ragged gums on the distant range.
