Random places that you have heard The Pogues

Post Thu Oct 06, 2005 10:38 pm

I nearly shit my pants today. I attend the University of Arizona, and I walked to the bookstore, just to look at the books obviously. Then I walked downstairs to the computer area, where they sell ipods and other computer stuff. In the corner is a computer with itunes on it. Speakers are in the corner of the wall. I walk by... and.....

I hear a voice that has lulled me to sleep, a voice that has driven me to rage, a voice that has brought excess, virtue, vice, glory, and excellence to my life...

Dirty Old Town is playing. I almost fell to the floor twitching and frothing at the mouth. There are a shitload of Pogues songs on the itunes, so I play a few, just standing by myself in the corner. Then, about to leave (sadly I had to go to class), I put on Sally Mac, turned the volume up to the maximum, and left smiling out the door.

Nothing too exciting I guess. Anyone heard The Pogues in unexpected places? And then did you proceed to collapse and cry for joy? Maybe that's just me.

Heard them on the radio here a few weeks back ("Honky Tonk Women", of all things) and actually called a friend to tell her. She was unmoved, but I was thrilled.

At Burning Man several years ago I was wandering one street back from the Esplanade around 10:00am. I passed behind the Death Guild/Thunderdome camp and was pleasantly surprised to hear The Pogues coming from one of their trailers. This was made particularly entertaining since the Death Guild/Thunderdome guys typically listen to a lot of industrial and thrash metal, and have an overall visual aesthetic very similar to ... well ... the last two Mad Max movies.

In a slightly related vein, I just heard the Clash/Joe Strummer singing "Lost in the Supermarket" in the HEB Grocery store. To hear anything this brilliant in this chain of stores run by ultraconservative hardshell southern Baptists is nothing short of a sign from above. Somewhere Joe is laughing.

Well, This is more a random place I've heard OF The Pogues... an old canadian TV show called Degrassi Jr. High... one of the main charactors is a pogues fan, and it leads her to meeting an irish guy she dates, and her best friend gets taken on a date to see the pogues... and then later on the Next Generation Degrassi, the charactors daughter uses POGUES as a password to her email account... pretty random. Too bad they never actually played any Pogues music on the show... but they do have the distinction of being the only real band refrenced to and talked about on the show, other then pretend ones!

I was holidaying in Pattaya Beach in September this year and we walked into a bar because we could here what we thought were the strains of the instrumental bit out of Thousands are Sailing.

It turned out to be a traditional Thai folk tune!!!!

I've heard them on this one roleplaying game I kinda play. Just like Drunk N Sober said, you enter this one pub (or did, don't know if it's still there) and they play "Sally Mac".
“An’ this is the last of Brummy,” he said, leaning on his spade and looking away over the tops of the ragged gums on the distant range.

Ive heard the Pogues in 2 movies (friend goes to Notre Dame thats how i know they play the Pogues) My only experiences out of my stereo were in 2 movies which were State Of Grace it stars Sean Penn and Gary Oldman as Irish Mob in NY if you watch it they play White City when Terry Noonan(Penn) is walking in the irish bar. And Ladder 49 with John Travolta i believe they played If I Should Fall From Grace With God in the bar in the movie.
