Re Mistlethrush: I love that track. Philip, is there a story behind that song?

And, as far as "dream" tracks, I'd add "The Clobberer" (which I don't think was ever recorded),
and "Faithful Departed", which has my vote as a track the Pogues _should_ have recorded.

There's not really much of a story behind "Mistlethrush". Andrew wrote some lyrics and asked if I would write a tune for it. He didn't especially like the results, which is why the song never progressed further. I think the lyrics, a Nature Boy's tribute to his gal pal, are a sort of coded love ballad to Deborah Korner, Andrew's partner, who was still alive then and who was later, tragically, the force behind "My Baby's Gone" and "Four O'Clock In The Morning". David The Man Behind The Wire Simon shares your enthusiasm for "Faithful Departed", by the way.

OK, so I'm a little slow, but I just ordered the box set through the link on the main page. What the fuck, my 401k has taken a bigger dive than the Chinese girls.

And just over one week later, I'll have to echo the sentiments already mentioned....superb work Philip, and all involved.
Although I've only made it through disc 2, I've already listened to several tunes that I've never heard before.
Don't know if the "what song is stuck in your head" thread is still around, but "My Baby's Gone," has been running through my noggin all day. I don't know if this song has been discussed previously, but I replayed it several times, finding it kinda' haunting, given the vocalist. Don't get me wrong, I loved it....on to disc 3.

I received it yesterday. It's great! Even though some songs might be harder to listen too, that was totally expected since there are a lot of demos and of songs that weren't good enough to go on the other albums. However, there are some gems on there! I love NW3. The Donegal Express version is weird, Shane is really not even trying anymore. I am listening to Disc 3 so far. I don't think I'd ever be saying this, but there is TOO MUCH stuff. There's more than 1h of music on each CD. It will take me a while before I listen carefully to each song.

Also, I don't like how the CDs are arranged in the box set. For instance, I have to take out the first CD if I want to take out the second one, and I have to take out the fourth CD if I want to take out of the fifth one. It's a little bit annoying.

But overall, good job guys (especially Phillip). I don't regret my purchase.

I echo the earlier poster's comments about "My Baby's Gone" - I love the boxset version, I really do (mind you, I love the "album version" as well). Having read about the story behind the song, I find it quite an emotional experience to listen to it. It's excellent, and must have been hard to record.

I just got my copy of the box set. Best price for me in the US seemed to be buying a new copy off ebay. Only came to around $50! Not bad.

Yes, I remember when I first got hold of Pogue Mahone and my wife heard "Four O'Clock..." and asked me if it was a true story. I said I didn't know. I suppose the answer is that it's based on truth. It's very moving. For some reason when I first heard "Four O'Clock..." I always thought it was about a child (not sure why, just one of those things I suppose), but obviously not. I haven't heard it for a while, perhaps I should give it a spin this evening... yes, I think I will.

Finnall i have got the box set and happy days indeed. I love it. I kind of prepared myself to be disapointed by some of the stuff on it but no I love all of it. Favourates so far are Do u believe in magic, Garbo and the live stuff from 88 that i always loved from vinyl. Thank u so much Mr C. Anyone know if the band will do anything off it on the tour? Cant wait till next sat
