Surely it's all at least as good as St. Patrick's Mix which appeared on the 2001 5-track sampler. :o

Who created this mix anyway Phil? What purpose was it to serve exactly?

That was bad, was it? Although I'm pretty sure I have a copy, I can't say I've ever listened to it.

Between 1995 and late 2001, when we reformed, the Brothers Warner pretty much ran roughshod over our catalogue and one of the first things myself, James, Spider and Darryl did in 2002 was to wrest back control, or at least supervision, of our music from the record company. There are still more-or-less constant battles to succumb to brainwaves emanating from dark corners of the Warners empire, but we tend to win most of them these days. One of the ongoing problems of a company as large as Warners is the constant flow of personnel: it thwarts continuity. Furthermore, different departments at Warners seem to have differing purposes and competing agendas.

In that light, I cannot tell you who created the St Patrick's Mix or what purpose, if any, it was meant to serve.

I think I can safely say there will be no more box sets now. None in my lifetime anyway. None that require my involvement.

If this could be released properly even if on MP3 or CDR sold legally through the website it will save the bootleggers making a fortune (like the one on Ebay who isn't selling the 'Rare Tracks' 3 CDR set anymore since the box-set's release!)
Most of these tracks are floating around, so round 'em up and release them please!

Cheers. (Roll on Bristol Academy) :D

Perhaps this could be released with profits going to charity (R.I.P. Ronnie & Kirsty)
I'm sure people would buy it, due to the fact most of these tracks are virtually impossible to get hold of now. (I can't get hold of tracks 31-37 for love nor money!) Even if it's just a CDR made from CD singles/MP3's.

I think that kind of stuff is so interesting, because we "regular" people are probably never going to be able to hear anything like that live. It's kind of like being in a green room, you know what I mean? It's like at a TV taping or movie set: everyone *always* wants to know what happens in between takes or backstage. They don't care about what got broadcast; they want to know what was left out.

"We are the Pogue Mahones/Fuck The Clash and the Rolling Stones", repeated into fade out.....................

O if only to have a recording of that!

"Now Look Them A Slight Bit Crooked In The Other Eye -The Pogues Box Set 2: Outtakes of Pogues Box Set 1" for the True Fan® Only :P

Well, we can only hope the bootleggers are up to the task on this one. I feel certain it's not something the brothers Warner would be interested in. Not when they haven't repackaged "Streams of Whiskey" in, oh, six months or so.

We can only hope to ever hear this one!!
I bet you have a copy of the song in your possesion.. Maybe you could send it to me secretely and I'll wil be the bootlegger that is up for the task.. :D I wont tell anyone where it came from..

Ok, if your going to do this , (since we're dreaming why not) you have to include those weird obscure one off live tracks also. Bobby Mcgee, Darklands, White Light White Heat, Holy Ground, 18th Day of Novemeber, etc. That could expand it to 2 discs!

I commend you for the thoroughness of your research - there are alt. versions there I did not even know about. While I wouldn't mind having a copy of this myself, I'm pretty much certain the Brothers Warner would not be interested in the sales potential and it would, in any event, leave us wide open to accusations of barrel-scraping. In addition, there is - frustratingly - very little on our tape boxes etc to indicate alt versions, which means everything must be listened to individually, and with the sort of ear only someone such as yourself is likely to have to identify the variation - even after doing the remasters and the box set I am, frankly, no closer to knowing whether or NOT I ever came across the "alternative" version of "Rake At The Gates Of Hell" from Straight to Hell or even quite which version of "Rainy Night In Soho" is which. Also, there is NO definitive version of, say, "The Irish Rover", as the recording was made expressly for the Dubliners' 25th Anniversary album and when it became a single, we remixed it for that, giving it a bit more bollocks than Eamon Campbell had on the Dubliners album, which means the single is not actually the original version. Moreover, every time you want to listen to a tape from this period, it is wise to first of all "bake" it, to avoid the possibility that it will shed oxide on to the playback heads, a common fault with some magnetic tape from back then. It's a time-consuming and, therefore, expensive process.

By the way, we don't consider the LILT tracks to be even remotely Pogues-connected, despite the fact that some of us make cameo appearances on the album. I don't believe I've ever attended a Jesus and Mary Chain recording session either.

While on the matter of completists, I confess I am slightly surprised we did not have a single comment about the omission of our version of "The Patriot Game", which was played at the curtain call of every performance of Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant Of Inishmore at the RSC Stratford, the Barbican, the Garrick Theatre in the West End, the UK tour, the Off-Broadway production at the Atlantic Theatre and, finally, the Broadway run at the Lyceum, New York. As the recording only features Darryl, Jem, myself and Andrew [along with Kerry Condon and Stephen Warbeck], I doubt it would ever have made the cut anyway - it was both post-Pogues and, as it turned out, pre-Pogues revival too, so it was outside the remit. All the same, people asked for the LILT tracks................

Indeed, you wouldn't have...not for this track anyway, because it ocurred during Shane's solo period...maybe even before The Popes came into the picture.

Though I claim to be a completist...in due time...I have to admit that this sounds only remotely familiar.

Similarly, there are tracks on the boxed set which I've only, within the last couple years ever heard reference of, and others which are - even in name - completely new to me.

I think you'll find you have this in common with most/all of The Pogues. Some tracks were genuinely forgotten by band members, even sometimes if they had apparently written the thing. Also, not everything had a title until one was required for the box set. This allowed, for example, Terry Woods to belatedly name his Hell's Ditch outtake "The Black Dogs Ditch" [the "missing" apostrophe is deliberate, which has not stopped everyone trying to correct it on our behalf] without having the faintest recollection of it, and no inclination to listen to it either, in the hope that this might stimulate memory. On the tape box, it was temporarily listed as "Terry's Heirs" which, I confess, was my doing.

Strummer: "Ask Terry what it's called."
Chevron: "What's it called, Terry?"
Woods: "It's not called anything.............um, call it 'Terry's Airs' for now"
Chevron: "Joe, it's called 'Terry's Heirs'"

It did cross my mind Phil but I never got around to asking about it. I was lucky enough to see the show on Broadway and recognised the Pogues influence immediately. Remarkably it never seems to have turned up on the interweb other than a snippet in this video trailer for the play

Always something new to learn about the boys!

I've uploaded the whole article. Enjoy!

Jem is not quite accurate when he says opera was one of our "secret" desires. It was an oft-discussed notion at one point between ourselves and Kirsty MacColl, and it mutated into a Pogues/Kirsty version of the musical West Side Story before both our record companies told us not to take so many drugs.

Delighted to finally learn that we did "The Aria" as a demo for possible inclusion on Peace And Love, as none of us, including Jem, was able to remember the context or even the year. In that light, our educated guess of 1988 appears to be good enough.

Well, if it had been up to me you could have taken a bit more drugs. I would have loved your version of the West Side Story. A version taking say, Rangers and Celtic fans as the warring sides would do well on stage. (I think a local school did this take on the story a few years ago.)

Did that feed into your plans for that musical on a boxer you mentioned some time ago? I realise you're busy with one or two other things but there is still a small corner in my heart hoping for this to see the light of day.

Before it was West Side Story it was East Side Story and recast the Capulets and the Montagus as the New York Jews and the New York Irish. Fascinating though this surely was, it felt a bit Abie's Irish Rose to the creators, so they suspended the idea until a more happening demographic found its way to NYC. It's about to have it's first major Broadway revival next year, directed by Arthur Laurents and with input from lyricist Stephen Sondheim though not, sadly, the deceased Lenny Bernstein or Jerome Robbins. This will be the first production not to stick rigidly to the original - but frankly outdated - 1959 production template, and I understand it is now liberally sprinkled with untranslated Spanish.

The "boxer" musical, Jack Rooney In Person remains a long-term project. I have not abandoned it, but it keeps getting shunted aside for other projects. One song from the show, "Manhattan Moon", sung by Kirsty, appeared on her posthumous From Croydon to Cuba box set and another, Ronnie Drew's version of "Chasing Enchantment", may yet see the light of day if his Estate gives the go-ahead. I am currently involved in development theatre projects in New York, Galway and Alabama, but none of these, at the moment, is Jack Rooney In Person
