I think Sally Mac is Shane's Uncles Pub. It is mentioned in the Drink with Shane Book, and also I think Shane said as much in a fairly recent interview (can't for the life of me think where though). I always thought it was either Ireland or a Bar maid, which is rather more poetic than a Pub...

That would be "A Drink with Shane MacGowan", by Victoria Mary Clarke and the man himself (published by Pan, I think).

Good grief, this is an ancient thread. :)

I'd still like to know the name of the pub that supposedly inspired the song.

Me and my friend used to love this song. We even made a video of us doing it.

For years, like most people I suppose, I just assumed it was a girl, an old sweetheart. But apparently it is/was a particular type of home-made beer, or " home brew " we used to call it. This was particularly vile stuff that could only be drunk when you're already pissed. Depending on how you fermented the stuff it could be as strong as the strongest cider. " Sally MacLenanne " was the name of one of these beers. " To the greatest little boozer and to Sally MacLenanne ". I.E. To his favourite pub and his favourite beer.

(I ask the question on average every year or two, just in case anyone ever does know the answer.)
