Never mind. Figured out the problem.

This forum ("Announcements") has more restrictive permissions on it than the others. During the update they evidently became even more restrictive. Now they're loosened up to where they need to be.

DzM, dunno if this is a browser glitch (I'm using Firefox), or something that will be ironed out in due course . . . Now when you click on a URL within a message, it no longer opens in a separate window/tab as it used to do. Minor point, but something that's useful when you go off checking interesting sites and want to come back to Medusa!

Sadly, no. Not a typo. HTML was permitted in the previous version of the software. It seems to be not allowed now. It'll take a while to find all the spots where I used HTML directly and fix it.

Links in posts should now open in new windows (or tabs if your browser is so configured).

Well done! As a graphic artist, the whole new look pleases me. I like the colour and it looks neat and mostly easy to read, and I like the user details on the left. The only thing I don't like is the topic name that comes up large with every (?) post and does it need to say the user name next to the date posted (ie posted by....) when it is already clear who posted from the details on the left. Also the date of posts could be bolder. Of course these are minor personal preferences, on the whole it looks great!

I have not found the key that tells what the blue and red (mostly circles) icons designate left of the topic? Some static and some scrolling?

Those just indicate various types of topics. Big one with text is a topic. Big one with text that's red is hotter. Big one with scrolling text is popular. Etc etc.

Mostly just eye candy.

I haven't noticed any slowdown. That doesn't mean much though. I live behind a really craptacular internet connection.

Let me know if you notice a consistent performance problem. It could be slower software, or the internet connection to Gir could be swamped. The more you let me know of it, the more data I have to work with.

I am experiencing no problems. Everything is lighting quick. I am using Mozilla Firefox as my browser if that would make a difference.

If anything it opens quicker for me. I use Safari.

Thanks for fixing the link thingy. And all the rest of the great work you've been doing on this.

I suspect that the people reporting slowdowns (I've heard one or two private reports as well) may be using Internet Explorer 6 or older versions of Firefox/Mozilla (or maybe even older versions of Opera).

The new layout makes very heavy use of a modernish layout syntax called Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and older browsers have a track record of either not displaying many CSS tags properly OR of getting a bit CPU hungry when dealing with lots of CSS.

I hate to be the techie-jerk that always pounds on the "time to upgrade, people!" drum, but ... well ... Come on. Please? Really. FireFox 2 is a great browser. MSIE7 sort of doesn't suck. Opera 9.x is nice too. And those of you that use Safari - well, the layout engine is good, so keep on keeping on (though the feature set ... eww ... like using a text editor for word processing).
