Flogging Molly hasn't released a really consistent album since Swagger. I'm not the biggest fan of FM, I find Dave King annoying and his lack of giving credit where credit is due (i.e. The Pogues) really gets under my skin. I hope their new album is decent, but I'm sure no matter how many albums FM releases, they will never capture the brilliance of the first three Pogues albums. Just my opinion.

That is one of the many reasons why FM is not in the same class as The Pogues. Listen to the first couple of songs of Drunken Lullabies, I can't tell them apart, just lazy songwriting.

pogues24: But I´m afraid that´s the biggest mistake about FM - I´m not as huge fan of them as of the Pogues, but they play different music. Honestly, if so many people forced me to thank some band in every other interview (and journalists do annoy FM with that very frequently), I´d get pissed no matter how good the band is.

Besides, FM plays different music. It may seem similar, but it´s got more american sound, very different from first three Pogues albums, and it lacks complexity of later Pogues albums.

I think it´s a little bit like if you wanted to "force" some, let´s say death metal band, to give praise to Metallica - for people outside the genre, it´s the same music...but actually it´s very different.

I used to dislike Dave King, but then I learnt about his political stance and I started to like him much more :-)

But honestly, if I like someone/thing in Molly, it sure is Bridget :-)

And to matter of FM songwriting...I like it - when I heard them live, it didn´t matter some songs were similar, honestly. I mean, we can´t have second Pogues, because the Pogues were so unique and so skilled, it´s beyond my belief, sometimes. And all my three most favourite songwriters/lyricists of 20th century were in the Pogues.

I think where FM get a little...difficult to say - I mean something like they don´t evolve much; the Pogues had very interesting evolution, from good pub music, they slowly added complexity, and it all blended together wonderfully. That´s very difficult to achieve.

Pyro, I haven't seen you post on here in awhile, hope all is well. I agree with you in hindsight, but even Spider Stacy pointed out that FM tries to distance themselves from The Pogues, even though most of their songs sound like a Pogues song. But, apples and oranges in the long fun, on this topic.

Indeed, I´m good. The whistle eats more and more time though - I´ll be a whistle junkie in few months :-D And I´ll be buying a set of Uilleann pipes...poor neighbors :-)

I agree that FM tries to distance themselves from the Pogues often too much...on the other hand, I believe it´s sort of countermeasure against all those people, who force them to say how much they are based on Pogues music :-)

In my opinion, that´s the situation, where you are forced to some extreme, and so you take the opposite extreme stance.

Let me know how you get on. You can buy a starter kit for a bit cheaper until you need to upgrade. I have been threatning to get some for years. I will too one day. Bugger the neighbours.

Drunken Lullabies is their best album, IMO. And you have to give them credit, all of their songs are their own, save for the few jigs they incorporate like in "Salty Dog."

"I'm inspired by bands like The Dubliners and The Pogues," says King, who checked out a Pogues' reunion show on a 2001 holiday trip back to Ireland.

Enjoy! I love the Tossers best of the bunch. They always pay homage to our Pogues.
