On a last note Steve Earle who has recorded a song with the Pogues plays a reformed junkie, so loads of Pogues connections

Last week I was in the pub when I got an urgent message from my brother. Apparantly they used a Pogues song in a Dutch tv show. The skid was that some drunk man was walking around on the street and the only word my brother could hear was 'summer'. So I guessed it was Brown Eyes

Nonesuch to Release Music from Five Years of "The Wire"
Nonesuch is pleased to announce the January 8, 2008, release of the first soundtrack from the critically acclaimed, Peabody Award–winning HBO series The Wire. That's two days after the series kicks off its fifth season. It also marks the first time music from the David Simon–created show has ever been collected and released as an album.

The Wire: " ... and all the pieces matter" will include several versions of the show’s opening theme song—Tom Waits’s “Way Down in the Hole”—as performed by The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Neville Brothers, and DoMaJe, a group of Baltimore teenagers.

I've just started watching this from the 1st episode - someone involved with the writing/creation must be a fan - two of the detectives partnered are "Polk" and "Mahone".

Also, a unfamiliar cover version of "Dirty Old Town" appears in episode 3.

Ah this is definitely one of the greatest Amercian Tv Shows, right up there on my list with The Sopranos and NYPD Blue. I have watched all 3 series on dvd so far, 4th one out in March, there's also a great opening sequence in one of the episodes that's set to transmetropolitan, v.funny.

I cannot get over how many people have come up to me after catching up on the past seasons of The Wire to talk about the use of Body of an American. It certainly has created interest in The Pogues for a new demographic of sorts – mainly my crowd of indie-music centric minds that also enjoy David Simon’s take on America.

Is this a similar tune to anyone else? I already have five additional people attending the Chicago shows due to the presence of “Body” in The Wire.

In any case, I appreciate the new outlet and appreciate the decision to allow this tune in such an incredible series – it seems to have made an incredible impact on the Pogues following in my small segment of the world….

just watched that clip (I did not know of the show). That has the makings of a brilliant video. wish there was film back in 1965 at my grandfathers wake (which lasted 3 days) priceless

Stevie Earle does the theme song for the show this year. His character is raw. It's amazing how much the character is like his music.
One of the main detectives, Jimmy McNulty, drinks Jameson like Shaneo puts down gin.

There's another Pogues song that's going to be used in this series of the Wire. Jimmy is driving a homeless man to a shelter and he has Turkish song of the Damned playing on his car stereo. Possibly the best series of all time
