Gogarty's Music II - A decade on

Post Thu Jan 10, 2008 9:53 pm

Just been listening to this CD featuring musicians who play at the "Oliver St John Gogarty" in Dublin. One of the tracks has a "Shane McGowan" listed as playing the guitar. Anyone know if it's THE Shane MacGowan (note different spelling)?

I used to go to this session upstairs all the time @ the Olly St. John, always packed to the brims with stag partys, and tourists from all over who would flock there to pay for overpriced drinks....a little off subject, but no, its not THE Shane MacGowan....the same bloke plays in another place along the quays that is also an early house(the name escapes me).A few years ago myself and some friends showed up to a session at this pub that had a big poster outside that said Shane MacGowan was playing, needless to say Shane MacGowan WAS there, just not the one who is the lead singer with the Pogues

The first Irish pub in Hannover was run by Seamus and Geraldine MacGowan, both of whom were part of an Irish traditional band in the 70ies called "Oisín". While Shay rarely took a guitar in his hands after they came here, Geraldine kept on singing and releasing a couple of CDs. The guitar player on her latest CD, "Somewhere along the road", was a young guy named Shane McGowan. That might be the one you mentioned.

Unfortunately it seems that her homepage geraldinemacgowan.com has vanished. At least google couldn´t find it ...

By the way, Shay once told me that he was second cousin to The Pogues` Shane MacGowan. But given that MacGowan might not be one of the rarest names, plus the Irish tend to spot a good story from a million miles away, I wouldn´t bet on it ...

Thanks for that.

Incidentally the OStJG has a number of pictures of famous musicians adorning its walls, including Shane and another Pogue but I can't remember now which one (Philip/Terry, I think).
