To be honest, there's a lot more exciting people out there than Rick Rubin. Also his Neil Diamond album is shite and much of the Cash stuff was so-so at best.

The Straight To Hell version probably will be, which is quite hip-hoppy. I'm not sure which version we sent to Rubin. Our onstage sound man and sometimes Producer, Dave Jordan knew but is, alas, no longer in a position to tell us. Of the mountains of tapes we drew from the Warners archive to make this box set, "The Good The Bad and the Ugly" continually threw up only the same recording and mix, though we made at least half a dozen versions. Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy) and Nigel Lewis (Meteors, Tall Boys) appeared in some versions. Dave Jordan recalls the Rubin incident in Ann Scanlon's book about us.

I think Rick Rubin is the worst producer for the Pogues.

All he does is rent vintage equipment, record the band live in an empty L.A. mansion, and have the singer sing in a tiled shower.

Rick Rubin is just a BRAND NAME and doesn't deserve to be part of Pogues History merely for hitting the play button and lending his rubber stamp.

You'd get a one year contract with Columbia. And no record Instead= Columbia sues you/(Shane for not showing up) and Rubin shows up on VH-1 "BEHIND THE MUSIC" and/or writes a paragraph in his multi-million dollar book about how he tried to "SAVE" the Pogues.

Ugh.... I'm vommitting just thinging about it.

Please, Phil...... R. Rubin is so 1990 and so not the way to go.

One thing I don't think we could bear to do is spend months making a new record. We love each other but not that much. Attitudes towards a possible new album changed perceptibly when I suggested we try and record it in a week or so, almost like a live album. At the time I made this proposal, Rick Rubin was our obvious ally, but I only put his name forward to the others as a totem of how a new record might work without getting into laborious sessions which would keep us away from the golf course/our gaming machine/the internet.

Thus the broad shape of a new album remains, but we have no producer in mind, as such. Anyway, it's not on the cards at the moment though, as ever, we keep our options open.

In the meantime, parts of Just Look Them Straight In The Eye And Say...Pogue Mahone! may well feel like a new album to many listeners.

Also, my overseas ebay purchase of TV Tube HEart just arrived yesterday so tonight I am going to chill out and listen to it for the very first time in its entirety (probably multiple times) with much anticipation and merriment.
WOW - great to learn that the Pogues are having continued conversations of a new album.

The REM album, New Adventures in Hi-Fi i, was recorded in a similar fashion and I reckon was their last decent album.
Steve Lillywhite's the obvious choice, but listening to how well Billy Bragg's producer Grant Showbiz worked on Mermaid Avenue and Braggy's last CD would make him a useful pair of hands.

Unless, you know, this group of guys that have worked with each-other on/off for twenty-five years have looked at the process and decided that the work involved would be No Fun At All.

Doesn't matter how much material is there if the possible payback does not outweigh the possible lack of fun involved in the process. If they leave the studio swearing never to speak again, then the effort wasn't worth it.

Yeah, if a new album meant no more live shows due to the band no longer being in good spirits, I'd consider that pretty much not worth it at all. Plus, somebody's got to keep the art of live music performance intact, since sometimes it seems just about fucking nobody else is these days.

I'm a guy from Sweden and I'm new here on the board.
I've been a fan of The Pogues since the late '80's ...
...and I've been reading this site regular and I know The Pogues have played together again for quite a while.
So now I wonder, is there any album with new material to be released in the near future?
Does anybody knows? Any rumour?
