That, sadly, is an artifact of all those Macs mounting the FTP site as a shared volume.

You (or the site administrator) can safely delete the files, but the next time a Mac mounts the system like that the files will reappear.

Thanks Apple!

So does the mounted server pick up any new files that are added or do you need to re-mount it in order to find any new files and is it as simple as draging and droping files that i want to add in order to upload them- i'm with Firehazard a complete no brainer ?

I just want to stress - I am not providing instruction on how to use this FTP site. I am just answering questions about using a FTP site. These instructions and info apply equally to all - even sites not endorsed by or affiliated with our Medusa.

That said - The mounted point should periodically update itself with new content. You should be able to copy files off of it and onto your local computer by dragging the file to your desktop (or a folder, etc).

You should also be polite to the server on the other end of the connection and unmount ("Eject") the volume after you've added/copied the files you want.

If you don't then your system will "ping" the server at a regular interval (probably every five or ten minutes) for updates/changes (e.g. "And new files? Anything deleted? You still there? Hello?") If a server isn't expecting this kind of chattiness then it can get bogged down in answering these requests rather than actually doing its day job. Hence the politeness.

Rum, I often have a queue of people waiting to "borrow" my Mac to sort out their ipods...

And I have now worked out how to eject the thingummy from my whatsname. So not too much "pinging" I hope. Thanks again, DzM.

When trying to upload i'm geting a message saying the file can-not be modified and therefore can't be moved, thats useing the drag and drop method, is there another way or do i need to do something to the file first ?

Make sure the file/folder you're trying to upload doesn't have the same name as an existing file/folder.

I Have (Hopefully) Just added a Radio 1 Session of Shane & The Popes from the Mark Radcliffe show. This is from around 1996 I think.

I Had the same message when I tried to add the Radio Session above using finder. I also have an FTP Client called Cyberduck. (Freeware) This worked first time just by dragging and dropping the files.
