It's only a partial answer, but the fact of the matter is it was Hillary's election to lose, and she lost it. And while all the blame is not specifically hers (although some sure is), the fact is that her generation of Democrat - while doing good things on race and identity politics - have made their careers moving away from the working class and towards big banks and big business. And as much as we all know that is true, the point is it is REALLY true. In fact, there's a great article somewhere about how the "new" democrats of the 60/70s literally ran out the Dems old-guard anti-big business/big bank leader. And while he was run off for being on the wrong side of the segregation debate, he was replaced by folks who literally owned banks.
