Hockey

Post Fri Nov 14, 2008 4:12 pm

Since hockey hasn't been touched on, I thought I'd throw it out there in preparation for the Pogues' March tour...

I know it's early days, but I really like The Habs this year. Actually Vancouver is my closest team and I usually pull for them, occasionally making the 2 1/2 hr. trek north to take in the odd game. In all honesty I just want to see a Canadian team win the cup this year.

There used to be a hockey thread, but I guess it must have fallen off the edge of the raft because it hadn't been used for a while. Don't know much about the game myself, but I'll be interested to read about it... so keep the thread going, guys.

Actually my dad was a keen hockey player in his day, and I used to go watch and watch him when I was a kid. Though that was the type played on grass, not on ice. It was still possible to knock a fair few teeth out in the playing of it, though.

[Edit: By the way, I don't know why the previous hockey thread has fallen off the raft. I assume there must be some rule about if threads aren't used in the Sport section for a while they disappear. I wouldn't have thought it was that long since the hockey thread was used... maybe there are different rules about it in the Sport section than in the other Speaker's Corner subsections such as Politics, where threads seem to survive even though they haven't been touched in ages... I sort of feel that as moderator of this section I should know this, but I don't.]

Well, I'll help keep it alive. B's finally give the Habs a whipping last night. Now, if the Pats had only won the coin flip, it would have been a great night.

Rangers were looking good at the start of the year. Now, not so much. I saw them play the Oilers last week and they looked like a high-school hockey team (U.S. not Canada) for 50% of the game. Pretty soon they'll start their slow decline toward mediocrity.

Do they have HS hockey in Canada? Wouldn't anyone decent be playing Jr? I would say HS hockey is the Boston area (and Minnesota) is pretty top notch.
The Catholic Conference (Matignon, CM,SJP, AP, etc) and Prep Schools have produced a ton of NHL players. I remember one year Acton-Boxboro suited up
7 NHL draft choices, inc. future ROY/Vezina Tom Barrasso, Bob Sweeney and Jeff Norton. Ah..hockey talk! :D

Watched the Canucks route the Leafs last night...talk about inspiration, it was end to end stuff. The leafs totally out skated them in the first 5 minutes until they had a 2 minute 5 on 3 power play which the Canucks killed off and turned the tables on them. Luongo in goal looks like he could carry the team this season.

I grew up in CT and played at my public highschool. We weren't even in the same league as all of the prep schools in the state. Actually Chris Drury went to a relatively nearby prep school. I don't even know what things are like in Canada.

i suppose I should have said - the Rangers were doing things that I would've gotten my ass sat on the bench when I played hockey in HS. they looked like goddamn amateurs.

Finally the Internet leads me to another Boston Bruins fan! Tied for first in the east as of last night's win over Tampa

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents since I was on the last hockey thread quite a bit. How bout them B's!?!?! :D I was so excited after last years showing in the playoffs when they took the hated Habs 7 games. I'm even more excited this year. I really don't think anybody saw this coming. I've been to a couple games this year & its a great atmosphere at the Garden.

You were supposed to beat us in 4 last year!
I don't think you've beat us in regulation this year...not exactly what I'd call downing us. Anyway big game coming up on tuesday! Should be another good one.

Hahaha! Rangers & Habs at Fenway?...great...I'd show up to cheer for...the refs? :?
But really the Winter Classic at Fenway would be cool, but I think as was the case at Wrigley alot of the sightlines would suck. Some have suggested Harvard Stadium as a venue which would be better for fans seeing it, but a less interesting venue.
