Not to take anything away from SA, but England were just about as poor as expected. Though it wasn't anything approaching their best team. I suspect there will be a few more of the squad clutching their stomachs this week...

Absolutely. And with the clash with the European finals that ruled players from several clubs out of consideration too. I'd guess it was a tour that Ashton inherited rather than chose to undertake.
