Is anyone even a little bit surprised that England didnt get it? The whole thing is an absolute farce of the highest order. It reminded me of the Eurovision Song contest. It just lacked a camp host and Terry Wogan's comments over it.

Russia and Qatar? Early indications suggest the following 2 will be in Afganistan and The Faroe Islands. No infrastructure, stadia or interest but what a legacy!

All we need now is for David Cameron to blame the previous Government....

Russia will be great hosts and it is good of Fifa to give them a chance to prove that their economic and social resurgence can manifest its self as a successful World Cup. Qatar I am less sure of, their wealth seems somehow temporary and by 2022 I fear things may not be so rosy for them. But, I am usually wrong about such matters

I love how The Sun have shot into blame the Beeb mode. If England had lost, by say, one vote then maybe the editorial judgement of showing Panorama when it did could be criticised, any old excuse eh?

I am fancying my chances of playing a World Cup in England less and less now

I wonder whether it's crossed Dave's mind (Cameron, not Beckham) that the fact that he and Gideon have been telling everyone for the last six months that the country is so hard-up that the government's got no alternative but to take money from its poor and disabled people might just have made people worry about the financial stability of the bid?

I guess that's not the main reason for England's failure, which is at least partly down to "nobody likes us". And the above-mentioned hubris and self-satisfaction, not least of the presenting team (though I'd let Beckham off the blame), confirming the impression England always gives that it considers itself the centre of the universe.

Good luck to Russia, let's hope it's a good one. They may have "England's" football, but in return at least they seem to have given us their weather.

And Qatar, oil-rich state, one of the wealthiest places in the world? Wonder how the World Cup ended up there...

It's really quite astonishing. From a distance it has just seemed like Ashley has been eagerly waiting for an opportunity to dismiss Chris Hughton. Hughton seems like a thoroughly decent bloke who has conducted himself with considerable dignity throughout. The early speculation is that Martin O'Neil is the favourite to replace him......on his track record on previous relationships with chairmen, he would last about 20 minutes.

RIP Ralph Coates, owner of one of the best combovers in football. BBC describe him as a Spurs player, though I've always thought of him primarily as a Burnley player.

I always thought he was trying to copy Bobby Charlton in the 'comb-over sex god' stakes. RIP.

Good old Arsenal; thoroughly thrash Chelsea, then give up a goal to a 10-man Wigan side. Counting the earlier loss to Spurs (after leading 2-0), that's 5 dropped points that would have been good enough to put them top of the table. It's a depressing thought.

Another lurch on the Selhurst Park rollercoaster, whether it is upwards, downwards or sideways only time will tell. I never thought that I would be pleased by a 3-0 hammering by Millwall but it forced the men in charge to make the difficult decision to get rid of George Burley, a good manager but one who wasn't the right man at the right time.

The lads done brilliant at Bolton, shame about the last 10 mins, cliched i know, but it was a great day out,my first visit to the Reebok, though from what i remember, the home crowd made much more noise at Burnden Park, sign of the times i suppose.Congrats to Stevenage, what an amazing result!

Been to the old ground (Burnden Park?) I don't like many of these new grounds..not that i've been to many...but they generally all look the same..and i've got a big problem with grounds named for a sponsor...ugh! Or especially named for the club owner...like 'The DW Stadium'..how dreadfully tasteless.
