The Bristol Studios had a very 'responsive' balcony when it came to certain bands ability to induce a cantilever effect on the floor.

First gig that I can recall was The Cult, back in 1985.

I saw the Supremes in Atlantic City on the Steel Pier when I was a little kid. Diana Ross had just left them not long before that show. My parents took me against my will. The first show I went to on my own was Molly Hatchet in 1981 at Millesville U. Their lead singer had just left as well, which is kind of strange. What a bunch of red necks. At the time, I was pretty much a redneck myself, so it made since....from Molly Hatchet to Radiohead would be a good title for the story of my life. Available at Easons and Borders spring of 2012..

My dad was a jazz musician who was friends with the road manager of the Woody Herman Orchestra, so we saw them every time they came to Michigan as far back as I can remember. He also took me to Blood, Sweat and Tears in 1972.

I have a faint memory of seeing Duke Ellington around 1973 (he died in May of 74, so it had to be before then).

We moved to rural, northern Michigan in 72 and there was only one place that had live music nearby, otherwise it was 250 miles to Detroit. This place would have a dozen or so concerts in the summer, as it was an outdoor venue. Mostly country or MOR acts. The first rock concert I was allowed to go to (no way my dad would take me to *cough* "rock" acts  ) was Billy Idol on the Rebel Yell tour. It was pouring down rain. All the new wave kids' hair and makeup were wrecked. It was a blast.

As I think I've documented before, I have real trouble trying to work out which exactly was my first "proper" gig.

It'd've been back in 197X, and it was either SLF, with my friends in the north.

Or it was John Martyn at the Hammy Odeon (as was).

Both were around the same time, and I just can't remember the exact dates or which came first. 'Twas all a bit hazy...

There was a Graham Parker gig that I went to around the same time. But I know that wasn't my first one.

SERIOUSLY? You've gotta share some details.

Did Hendrix open?

Oh...wait...was this a geriatric reunion tour? Well, I'd still like to hear about it. A couple of the Monkees tunes are seriously great songs, no matter who played on them.

Unfortunately, it was one of those geriatric reunion tours, though of course I wish I had seen the original ones with Hendrix. I remember enjoying this show anyway, though!

Good to hear that you like some of their songs. I really liked The Monkees (and actually still do) and it's always nice to hear when other people appreciate the best of their material.

They bring back fond memories from when I was a grade school kid watching them on television. Last Train To Clarksville, (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone and I'm A Believer all classics.

METALLICA.

On the "...and justice for all" tour, sometime in 1988, October, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. I banged my head & shook my fists so much my neck & shoulders were sore for DAYS. Seriously. I was 15. A great time. I think i still have the ticket stub at home.

Even had a Spinal Tap-esque moment when the statue of Blind Justice - which had been raised during the first few songs - came down amidst explosions & pyrotechnics during the title song. The head narrowly missed Kirk Hammet, who jumped out of the way, and then bounced (the head, not Kirk) into the drum riser, knocking over some cymbals.

The first concert I attended was German rock singer Udo Lindenberg in 1987, when I was fourteen.
About a year later, I went to see Austrian band Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung (who did their songs usually in German, but had a minor hit with the english version of "Ba-Ba-Bankrobbery", too).
Then my uncle introduced me to Irish music , so in 1988 I went to see The Dubliners and in 1989 The Pogues.

Oh god, I can remember that EAV tune, and it's snuck back into my mind. I can feel it clawing in now..:(
