Must Be Luff

Well I'm admittin' I was driftin'
When I came into your harbor
But I feel my spirits liftin'
Like a wind just off the starboard bough
Well I know I swore I'd love no more
But you rolled in you called my bluff
You take the wind out of my sails
Must be luff, must be luff

I been down, I been around
I drink the whiskey, don't drink no water
This ain't my first seaport town
I'm a salty seaman's daughter
But you rock my boat, it'll hardly float
And when you talk that soft romantic stuff
You take the wind out of my sails
Must be luff, must be luff

So fly that jolly roger high
Don't lie, you are a pirate
Shanghaied my heart, stole my soul
Don't you try to deny it
How I cried when you took my pride
And when that just wasn't enough
You took the wind out of my sails
Must be luff, must be luff

I was walking down Oxford Road
Dressed in what they call the mode
I could hear them spinning all their smash hits
At the Mecca of the modern dance, the Ritz

My feet foxtrotted
My shoulders did the shimmy
The bouncer on the door said "a gimme, gimme, gimme"
I gave 'em the tickets, they gave me the shits
No healthy arguments in the Ritz

Standing by the cig' machine, who did i see
In lurex and terylene, she hypnotised me
I asked her name, she said it's
"Salome Maloney, queen of the Ritz"

Lacquered in a beehive
Her barnet didn't budge
Wet-look lips, she smiled as sweet as fudge
She had a number on her back
And sequins on her tits
The sartorial requirements
For females in the Ritz

A man making like Fred Astaire
Complete with spats and tails
A Douglas Fairbanks moustache
Dirty fingernails
Whose snide innuendo was as subtle as the blitz
Waltzed off with Salome in his greasy little mitts

Standing in the dandruff light
Trying to get pissed
Amongst the head-lice, old spice, brut and body mist
How can she be seen dead
Dancing with that tit
Her being Salome, el supremo of the Ritz

Tables flew, bottles broke
The bouncers shouted "lumber"
The dummy got too chummy
In a Bing Crosby number
The bouncers said it's suicide
Trying to get your mitts
On Salome Maloney, the queen of the Ritz

When the ambulances came,
She was lying on the deck
She'd fell off her stiletto heels
And broke her fucking neck
The band threw down their instruments
The management threw fits
She's dead. She don't bring the business to the Ritz

The over twenty-one's night said it was a shame
The divorcee club will never be the same
Joe Loss killed himself and Vic Sylvester quit
When the death dance drama did away with the Ritz

When the last waltz withered
And the quickstep stopped
The ladies excuse me was permanently blocked
And Mecca make a living
Selling little bits
Of Salome Maloney
In the wreckage of the Ritz

:D Do it in whatever accent you like but Salford works best...

'I fell in love with an alien being'...John Cooper Clark...1977?

I fell in love with an alien being whose skin was jelly whose teeth were green
she had the big bug eyes and the deathray glare feet like waterwings purple hair
I was over the moon asked her back to my place and then i married the monster from outer space

the days were numbered the nights were spent in a rent-free furnished oxygen tent
where a cyborg chef served up moonbeams done super-rapid on a lazer beam
i needed nutrition to keep up the pace when i married the monster from outer space

we walked out tentacle in hand you could sense that the earthlings would not understand
they'd go nudge nudge when we got off the bus saying it's extraterrestrial not like us
and it's bad enough with another race but fuck me a monster from outer space

in a cybernetic fit of rage she pissed off to another age
she lives in 1999 with her new boyfriend a blob of slime
each time i see a translucent face i remember the monster from outer space.

It's on youtube if yer interested. meh...

There's some good ones in this thread. I like that last one!

One of my favourite underrated writers is Jeffrey Lee Pierce of the Gun Club, a big influence on Nick Cave and White Stripes to name the first two that spring to mind. I'd probably class him as my favourite, tied with Shane, though I have a few others who are up there for me.

SHE'S LIKE HEROIN TO ME

I cannot get a look at it / So I'm burning them on the deal anyway
I see her come down / From the top of the stairs
I guess that I'd be cool but there's a tickle in my veins
I've been a real good tombstone but now I'm blowing away

She is like an eye-blue swimming pool / But she will never know that she is there
We sit together drunk / Like our fathers used to be
I'm looking up and God is saying, what are you gonna do
I'm looking up and I'm crying because I thought it was up to you

She's like heroin to me / She's like heroin to me
She's like heroin to me / She cannot miss a vein

Don't let her take her love to town / They can never fill her heart
She needs a passion / Like her father's used to be
I know because I'm like the train shooting down the mainline
I know because I'm the Indian wind moving on the telegraph line

She's like heroin to me / She's like heroin to me
She's like heroin to me / She cannot miss a vein

I cannot get a look at it / So I'm blowing back trouble to the east
While we sit together sad / Like our fathers used to be
I know a perfect run by the sleep it puts in my heart
I know my special rider I can feel her in the dark

She's like heroin to me / She's like heroin to me
She feels like heroin to me / She cannot miss a vein

BROTHER AND SISTER

Why do you keep me way underground
My sight is dying as was the sound
Why do you paint me and cover me with jewels
Where are we going, what are we going to do

You used to say, you'd take me home
But I keep falling to the sister
Cuz brother falls unto the sister
Keep getting pushed further and further away

The sins of me buzz and hiss in the trees
Their little skeletons will harm no-one
Why do you bring them always back to me
Kingdom will come and Thy will be done on heaven and earth and me

[chorus]

And who is that there always beside you
When I count us together together we are only two
I had a dream and there was foxfire in your hair
I am your brother your lover I give you my blood and I'll follow you anywhere

Two by World Domination Enterprises, just 'cause.

Bullit Man
------------
Well, I went outside I guess there must have been a fight
Down on the corner of the road dust site
Everybody gonna wind up dead
'Cause the Watchman's watchin' what the Bullit man said
Yeah
I said the Watchman's watchin' what the Bullit man said
No

Now Watch says "Bullit, baby, I don't know
This whole operation cost a lotta dough"
Bullit says "Watchman, mind your head"
The Watchman's watchin' what the Bullit man said
Yeah
I said the Watchman's watchin' what the Bullit man said
No

Aw Pepsi and a fever, palsy and a will
The garbage can man just can't keep still
Everybody gonna wind up dead
The Watchman's watchin' what the Bullit man said
Yeah
I said the Watchman's watchin' what the Bullit man said
No

Hotsy Girl
----------
Around the world in Hotsy Girl
Yeah yeah
It's about a mile from the chemical firm
Yeah yeah yeah
Get on the streets there's a riot in town
Yeah yeah
Cause Hots keeps trashin all the jailhouse down

Gonna trash the coffee shop, trash the bank
Yeah yeah
Rip off the gas to gas the tank
Yeah yeah
Then we'll stop on the freeway, give a cat a ride
Hotsy and crew are bound for suicide

Gonna trash the world in Hotsy Girl
Yeah yeah
It's about a mile from the chemical firm
Yeah yeah yeah
It's about a mile from the nuclear station
Hotsy and crew gonna trash the nation

A sweet and simple one from the Incredible String Band

Air
-----
Breathing, all creatures are
Brighter than the brightest star
You are by far

You come right inside of me
Close as you can be
You kiss my blood
And my blood kiss me

And two of the best songs about a girl.

A Girl Called Johnny by the Waterboys
-----------------------------
I remember Johnny, hey
Johnny come lately
I remember her shoes like a ballerina
A girl called Johnny who

Changed her name when she
Discovered her choice was to
Change or to be changed
I remember a girl called Johnny

Black as hell and white as a ghost
"Don't talk about life or death"
She said "I've had enough of both"
A girl called Johnny who was not scared

They'd have torn her to pieces but
Who would dare?
I remember a girl called Johnny
The train came to town, boy she got on it

With no looking back, with barely a word
If she said goodbye, well I never heard
But the noise goes on
The noise, the jazz

And the truth is in somebody else's hands
And the house that a girl called Johnny built
Is now just ashes and sand

Liza Radley by the Jam
-----------------
Liza Radley, see the girl with long hair
See her creeping 'cross summer lawns at midnight
And all the people in the town where we live say she's not quite right
She don't fit in with a small town
They just can't understand why she's doesn't say much
But in a darkened room it's for their lives only she cries
Liza Radley, see her jump through loneliness
Liza Radley, take me when you go

And as the people pass by, their heads in the air
Haunted with their noise, she recalls a lonely sigh,
But no matter what they say, in her mind she knows
Their dream of life they won't ever find

And all the people in the town where we live say she's not quite right
She don't fit in with a small town
They just can't understand why she's doesn't say much
But in a darkened room it's for their lives only she cries
Liza Radley, I pledge myself to you alone.
She kissed my face and said love means nothing at all.
She kissed my face and said life means nothing at all.
