Does anyone remember this song or have it sung to you as a child? My Step-mother use to sing it to me and now we do a duet when we see each other (for my sisters kids....who I see once every 2-3 years) hehe. they like The Beastie Boys better and LOVE my iPod...anyway.

I have written down the words that I was taught (correct or not)

A MOTHER'S LAMENT

A mother was washing her baby one night
The youngest of ten, a terrible sight
The mother was poor... and the baby was thin
T'was nawt but a skeleton covered with skin

The mother turned round, for the soap on the rack
She was not but a moment, but when she turned back
Her baby was gone, and in anguish she cried
"Oh, where has my baby gone?", and the angels replied.....

Ohh.....
Your baby has gone down the plug hole
Your baby has gone down the plug!
The poor little thing..... was so skinny and thin...
He shoulda been washed in a jug (in....a....juuuggg)

Your baby is perfectly happy
He won't need a bath anymore!
He's runnin' about... with the angels above...
Not poor.....and very much cleaner...by...far.....

I loved that song. or at least our version of it. :)

Oh most certainly. Had it sung to me as a child and sung it in turn to my own kids (they mostly preferred it done in the punk version). And strangely I found myself reciting it to someone just a couple of days ago. There are a few different versions I've heard. Though the chorus is usually the same. Great stuff.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

Don't remember that being sung to me as a child, but I do remember my nanna and aunty telling me to get out of the bath quickly when they pulled the plug out or I'd go down the plug hole, which had me terrified.

We used to sing that in music lessons at Skegness school...the teacher was a big, loud theatrical guy..into amateur dramatics...had us sing in music hall cockney accents..'my biby 'as gorn dahn ver plag'ole, not lorst bat gorn befower'.

Swingin'Utters

Post Fri May 08, 2009 5:48 pm

All That I Can Give-Swingin' Utters

I took so many roads to find you
Full of dead ends and one way streets
It took some luck just to get near you
I like to believe it was destiny

Come to me, mine
I've so many things to show you
Come to me, mine
There's so much I have to tell you

My heros have fallen, been abandoned
I'd rather walk in my own shoes
Most of my idols have just vanished
Cleared Dusty shelves for something new

Come to me, mine
Follow the light that I left shining
Come to me, mine
Accept all that I am offering

I took so many drugs to see you
But ended up staring at my feet
Took up with derelicts and toyed with
manipulation and conceit

My days are numbered, as are your, dear
We're all aboard a stinking ship
I'm making all I can of mine, love
I'm giving all that I can give

Come to me, mine
I'm making all I can of mine, love
Come to me, mine
I'm giving all that I can give you, love

~although I doubt there are many Swingin' Utters fans here I decided to post this song anyway. I've always liked it. I wonder if it is onyoutube...(I can't get on youtube at work..)

http://www.last.fm/music/Swingin%27+Utt ... I+Can+Give

this is a live version. It's normally played in slower time.
