Pemberton, BC - Just a couple hours north and west of Vancouver, Pemberton sits in a flat valley along the Lillooet river, with mountains rising sharply on both sides.

We stayed three nights in a hotel so fancy there was ambient music in the parking garage, and of course those waffly housecoats with the hotel logo embroidered on 'em. We had stayed there years ago after blowing up a van on a nearby mountain road, and always wanted to go back under less stresfull circumstances. Well, the pandemic has scared the tourists away so we finally had our chance at prices we could afford.

As well as visiting two breweries (including one that was a farm - "The beer farmers") and a potato-based distillery (potatoes & root veggies are the main crops in the valley), we went horseback trail riding and also had our fill of wildlife, including some ground squirrel chipmunk-y guys, vultures, including seeing them walking around the ground looking like giant chickens, and a black bear (after basically looking for it and seeing many many tracks we finally found one as we were leaving the area we'd been searching). Most exciting, maybe, was a pika, because i'd only ever seen one years before, and he ran around us yelling for about 15 minutes.

And a few nice waterfalls on the drive as well. Right, THIS is why people come from all around the world to my home. Huh.

Caesars Palace had midweek rates of $40.

I had a four star hotel in SF for $59 and a four star in Philly for $69. Was booked to stay in a suite in Cambridge for cheap and an Irish hotel in DC that’s been out of my budget in the past.

But fuck all that if you’re from California.

I was off for six months, back at work since. My spouse has been working from home the whole time, still is. We moved on Dec 1 to a new neighbourhood. You may assume it was because the two older kids have moved out, and we needed less space, but really it was because Mrs. Me was so damn tired of walking around the same damn neighbourhood after working at home all day she needed a new locale to keep her from just hating every little thing.
