The smell of a sea lion colony is... memorable, which is a shame as one would rather forget it.
20 years ago I spent about a day hiking out to Cape Scott, the actual tip of the island, and one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Turns out it takes about 20 minutes in a boat
Low D wrote:I mean, I saw some whales from a ferry once (greys & humpbacks), but this was (at times) CLOSE. Bears are lovely and make me so happy, just to know they've managed to survive near us. However, I've certainly been lucky to have seen a few black bears (Ursus americanus) in the wild (and at a few dumps) in my time, so this humpback mom & baby, who did every motion in perfect synch, was amazing to me.
Now a grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) might trump a whale...I'll let you know if I ever see one.

Some relatives used to live in Tahoe and the beer drinking one would walk to the bar where there were always bears. Bears!!!
Bears! Like them and mountain goats.
Have you seen Grizzly Man? Sleeping bags are the soft tacos of bearland. Derp.

A relative had a bear in their apple tree in the middle of the night and knew due to motion detector lights.
I wasn't around and missed the big event.![]()
Four feet good.

A few years ago, eldest daughter was at a conference somewhere in Colorado where there were bears in the wild. They'd all been given instructions about how to stay safe if they encountered a bear. One night, she was with a group of colleagues coming back from a bar after dark when, right in front of them a few feet away, was a bear foraging through some bins. Being highly trained scientists, they all totally ignored the safety instructions, screamed and ran.
The bear ignored them completely.
