Australian Drawing Prize

Post Fri Dec 14, 2012 11:48 am

Here is the winner of the Australian Dobell Prize for Drawing 2012, "the most respected prize for drawing in Australia", I think not http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/exhibi ... wing-2012/

The winner says "I make stream-of-consciousness drawings", in other words he doodles. And wins $30,000 for his efforts.

Most of the 50 finalists produced work worthy of 7 year olds, with a large number using "collage" which consisted of paint, pencil and magazine cut-outs. Gimmickry has taken the place of talent, evidently, and what's new.

Compare the winner to this from the US http://www.robertliberace.com/figureDra ... allery.htm

Someone doesn't think much of Paul Simonon's artwork, it would seem:

Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

Awesome:

"So he really cannot put on an exhibition of his amateurish, idiotic, ugly and boring paintings at the ICA and expect to be hailed as some kind of outsider genius."

This reviewer should almost consider a switch to restaurant reviews. That industry really appreciates a well-turned snark. With some practice this writer can get there.
“I know all those people that were in the film [...] But that’s when they were young and strong and full of life, you know?”
