ATLANTA - March 9, 2009

Post Tue Mar 10, 2009 4:02 am

Just came from the Atlanta show. Outstanding! A show I've been waiting twenty years to see.

My one question for anyone who might know: does anyone know what Shane is doing in the little black booth he went into every few songs?
He sounded really good, even though I have no idea what he was saying in between songs.

It appears they played the same set list as the Florida show. Here it is:

Streams of Whiskey
If I Should Fall From Grace
Broad Majestic Shannon
Turkish Song of the Damned
A Pair of Brown Eyes
Repeal
Cotton Fields
Greenland Whale Fisheries
Sayonara
Tuesday
Kitty
Sunny Side of the Street
Body of an American
Lullaby of London
Thousands are Sailing (sung by Philip Chevron)
Dirty old Town
Bottle of Smoke
Sickbed
Sally MacLennane
Rainy Night
Poor Paddy
Fiesta
Irish Rover

What are the thoughts on the Atlanta show? I thought it was weak; I was pulling for the Pogues, like I pulled for Joe Strummer, Social Distortion and X, and was rewarded with great shows. But this show was not so good, the sound was bad and Shane is a train wreck. I want him to add to the sound of the Pogues and be part of the band. I think he took away from what the band could offer. I saw Shane and the Popes in LA some time ago at the Hard Rock and he could still function, but tonight was a poor representation of what this band and sound could achieve.

Ah, the mysteries of The Tent. We may never know exactly what goes on in there. He may be developing something that significantly advances cryogenic science in there for all I know.

It's a permanent part of our stage set up and basically it's a place for Shane to hang out during "Thousands", "Repeal" and "Tuesday" without having to stray too far.

What a show, what a night! Hard to believe how good EVERYONE sounded. We were in San Fran. in 06' and I must say they sounded way better last night. The crowd was good for a Monday night and, considering it was Atlanta, very attentive and appreciative. I had no idea that Mr. Chevron was a Forest Fan. Ah, back-to-back Euro (Champions League) Cups! I thought I heard Mr. Stacy say something about Mansfield Town. Better left unsaid!

My wife and I thank you guys from the bottom of our hearts for coming to Atlanta. It was truly magical for us to hear ya'll live again. Have a great run up North!!!

I thought they sounded great, and thought Shane sounded so good I asked the guy next to me if he got teeth. The words to the songs were clearly understandable most of the time. More so, it seems to me, than last year in Boston (which I also thought was a great show).

My only regret is that instead of staying on the floor, I went and sat up in the balcony. Never again. it's just not the same.

Looking forward to NYC, DC, and Boston.

Oh forgot to say: Mr. C. sounded FANTASTIC on Thousands. Really clear and strong, I hope he felt as good as he sounded.

Also, the pictures I took will start to go up in a few days at the below links:

I did that too last night, for the first time ever. My sentiments exactly.

Great job last night, guys. I took 3 friends who had never seen a pogues show, and you knocked 'em out.

Also glad to see the reaction of the Atlanta crowd - I was not sure what to expect, given that it was a monday nite, and I have never seen the Pogues outside of NY, but the energy in that place was just great. See you all on Friday.

EDIT - also, was tailgating in the parking lot, and Ted Turner walked by - did anyone see him in the show?

Yah, I saw Cap'n Ted in the car park too . . . great show even tho the sound was muddy at best, at least accordian and penny whistle blasted through . . . the crowd's love for Shane when he waddled out was palpable . . . he went in "the tent" 3 times during the show, each time for a one song break - if it was truly for oxygen this may be one of last tours (tho I think I've said that before) - but he came out smoking a ciggie each time, hmmm, open flame and oxygen use . . . the whole tent thing was weird, started making me think of Achilles - I think the steps to the stage were a factor, that is, once he got up on stage, no sense risking the stairs 3 more times - he went into the tent during encore breaks as well . . . had front row loge seat so great view of the moshing and 6 attempts at the stage (one successful - a brief loop during Bottle of Smoke then world-class stage dive taking down about 15 moshers) a girl almost made it but got dragged back by one foot - somehow the Security dudes seemed unprepared for a Pogues crowd - no fairytale, wah - prob saving for nyc - but Spider (in his tall ass shoes) and Shane bashing their heads w pie tins for percussion to Fiesta made up for it - huge scramble for the tins when they were thrown to the pit . . . ears still ringing just a bit - awesome night!

The last time I had been to Atlanta for a show (and the Tabernacle for that matter) was in 2006 for Tom Waits. We try to make the 4 hour trip from South Georgia count, I suppose.

The Pogues put on a terrific show. I feel like my world is better for it. The band had wonderful energy and Shane looked and sounded great.

For the record Shane was bashing his head against a Johnnie Walker Red Label serving tray, not a pie tin.

The Pogues were in excellent form last night. I travelled from S.C. to see the show with my two teenage kids ( son and daughter) and they loved the show. They were Pogues fans already, but after last night, The Pogues sealed the deal. My ears are still ringing also.

How DO these rumors get started? Really?

From where did you hear this oxygen-tent rumor?

I heard Shane had 15 prostitutes and an elephant in the tent.

There you go. Another more interesting rumor just got started. Spread the word!

And they were all huffing from the oxygen tank?
