Are there more scumbags there? And would you say there are none in London or Manchester or where ever?
I had no problems what so ever in Dublin.
Was it because i was lucky and stood in the pit??
Well i am really curious, that's why i ask.
Actually i am really fond of Ireland and Dublin, been there several times and always loved it, never had any problems.
I am planning going to London for next year shows, but thats more because of the stupid venue.
So tell me please!!

:)

I have travelled also to Dublin from the Netherlands to see The Pogues. I have been several times to the Brixton Academy and once in Glasgow. And although I have had a good evening in The RDS, it is really a shitty venue without anything that could be called atmosphere. And especially the crowd was in a vast majority very drunk and disrespectful to the music and that was what annoyed me the most during the night. And I really do agree Dublin is a great city and Ireland is a lovely country (this year we went to the west coast and vist Galway), but I will never visit Dublin to see a Pogues gig. I will keep visiting Dublin and Ireland but not to see The Pogues. I hope I can catch the Pogues next year in London!

At most pogues gigs the majority of the crowd is drunk, has always been so, from the beginning.
That doesn't annoy me at all! Would be surprised if they weren't

While I agree with quite a few of your points, I think respectfulness of the music may be way down my list of priorities. We did not give it a kick up its precious and hallowed ass just to see it get respectable again. I think we all know that a number of Pogues' songs are among the greatest works of Irish poetry in the canon, musically and lyrically. It is enough to be secure in that knowledge without enshrining it in the constitution. The Pogues' music, and great Irish music in general, is there to love to, be angry to, dance to, cry to, laugh with.........whatever emotion catches hold in the moment. Reverence kills off the things we love. There is always the option not to partake of this annual celebration of the living poetry of the Pogues' music, by staying at home and listening to the mainly excellent recorded versions.

I suppose though, if the RDS had civilised, mature licensing arrangements, people would not feel the need to get so tanked up before a quite lengthy show. Although I am now quite capable of staying away from an alcoholic drink for at least 14 years at a time, I perfectly well remember a time when an imminent prohibition, however shortlived, provided not just a reason but an imperative to fill up in advance of the drought. And I can't say I ever made the mistake of erring on the side of too little drink.

In fairness I don't think the crowd being drunk was the problem, I myself waas quite hammered but elected to stay at the back (gettin' auld). I have no problem with people getting drunk and blowing off steam or even being mischevious, it can be quite amusing, I believe this is part of the whole Pogues "experience". However, when people get drunk and become disrespectful and malicous that is when the problems start and there was an element of the crowd at the RDS who were behavng exactly like this.

Btw before anyone starts... The majority of the crowd were brilliant, drunk or sober, blowing off steam or relaxing.

First of all, I have nothing against drinking. I enjoy drinking! We have drinked a lot of pints before we went to the Pogues gig in RDS. And over there I am not annoyed by peole that are drunk in general. But! There is a huge difference between drinking, enjoying the music, show respect to the music and having fun and......drinking, the only thing that you can do is yelling, not noticing any difference between songs and being discrespectful to anyting that doesn't sound familiar. And that makes a difference! In my experience there where a lot of people in Dublin (and quite more than in Brixton for instance) that went to the Pogues gig ONLY because of getting drunk and having a party. And not noticing any of the poetic characteristics of the music of the Pogues at all..........

To all of the Pogues fans that read this forum and for which I am comvinced that they really show respect to the music:

A great New Year's Eve and all the best for 2009!!

Isn't all that a little bit pretentious? It seems to me that you guys want to have all the magic and the poetical part of the Pogues, without any of the "eccentricity" that comes with them. Just like if you could get 2000 alcohol-drinking people all behave the same correct and polite way... (and that when the lead singer himself can be, in his "darkest" times, a perfect example of disrespectful drunk, in his own way?)

I'm not trying to be condescending in any way but, if you were there you'd understand whats being said. The dissappointing things for me were as follows:

During the warm up act, Urban Voodoo Machine put on quite a show. I thought it was very entertaining. However, throughout the whole performance, a part of the crowd continuously chanted "shaneo" despite the number of times that the bands lead singer asked them to stop. He even tried to lecture them about respect but he was ignored.

Next was the fighting in the pit. Now, I'm well up for a good jump around and a bit of craic but this was way OTT. A group of lads who had been together all night started the kick lumps out of each other because they got bored during one of the slower songs.

The last straw for me was the disgraceful reception Ella Finer got. The crowd barely put their hands together for the poor girl despite Spiders encouragement. You could see the dissapointment on his and Ella's faces. It made me sick tbh.

I live in Dublin and have gone to the pogues gig there for the last 5 years. I'm young enough and enjoy the pit immensely, but I would think twice before going to the RDS again next year. I don't think I'm being unreasonable in what i've said. The show was great but the crowd were awful.
I love it when a plan comes together.

Does anyone know the name of the song that the Pogues took the stage to on Dec.22?

Guess it would have been 'Straight to hell' by the Clash as has been the case for some time - but alas I was not at that gig so can't coinfirm........

I go to a Pogues gig for a lot of things, but a lecture on respect ain't one of them. I'd do more than ignore anyone doing that, I'd verbally demolish them from the pit.

This world is rough and if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough. Let them be, have their fun I say. So long as they don't start on anyone else, then you take exception.

But I got a lot of time for the pointless piss-heads of the world, so I'm biased.

couldn't agree more, no-one wants a lecture at a pogues gig BUT just so you don't get the wrong idea about the urban voodoo machine...

after ages of not getting angry or annoyed at the continued shouting of shane-o between songs, the singer eventually said (and i remember it because i thought it was a totally fair enough comment) something like

"so are you all looking forward to the pogues? (huge cheer) yeah, me too. i love those guys, and i love shane too but he asked us to come and play this gig so if you could have a little repsect for that that'd be great"

hardly a lecture. i thought he really kept his cool, playing to the crowd not to the handful who were shouting. the shouting was embarrassing all the other fans around me but i noticed the same mouthy wee guys that were shouting were also dancing to the support band and smiling so i guess it's just their way of enjoying the night. i had the pleasure of seeing many of the dates on the tour and dublin was definitely "different".

the pogues were awesome, they have plenty to deal with from on and offstage too but they were a wee slice of rowdy heaven. what a fantastic tour. i really enjoyed both the bands, absolute magic! and ella finer was wonderful too :)

Oh, fair enough. It sounded like he went off on one about the proper respectful way to watch a rock n roll gig. Sounds cool.
