Boston 2008

Post Thu Mar 20, 2008 6:38 am

Another brilliant show. Everyone was on top of their game it seemed to me. Shane was perfect, the band was also, and the crowd, too. I will pardon Spider the "I love NY" tray (kidding) also. Philip was a welcome sight...you would never know the ordeal he has been put through based on tonight's show. He shames people decades younger than him with how he has bounced back (you know, the 4 and 5 year olds!). I won't go song by song, but this was one I'll put right up there. If you weren't there, get a ticket for tonight's (Thursday) show. Mr. Hunt said there will be free ice cream!

Wow :D My sixth Pogues w/Shane show in 21 Years (the last three years in Boston). After last year's Saturday night show at Avalon, I was dreading a bit of letdown moving back to the Orpheum and worried
about another year of wear and tear on Shane. Well, I can speak of my group, five veterans and one newbie
and add to the chorus, just a friggin' amazing show. Shane's voice seems to be getting stronger, I know
since 2002 (which was a lowpoint for me with Shane at his Paradise show) he justs seems to be getting
better and better.

Some quick highlights:

Mr. Chevron back, looking great, gracious as ever. 1000s sounded wonderful to us up in the mezzanine
and we all raised a glass to JFK!

Hearing Greenland, Dark Streets.

The amazing Mr. Fearnley. Great sax by Mr. Finer.

The whole band looking like they were enjoying each other (although I saw Terry flip either James or Daryl the bird!).

CC's girls getting tons of attention from Phillip and Daryl, and I noticed Mr. Chevron was given a very cute
giftbag from the girls.

See two cookie/beer trays get totally demolished during Fiesta by Shane and Spider, esp. the I Love NY one!

The only minor question I had was with Tuesday Morning-man, it seemed like it was played at a speed metal tempo-maybe Mr. Chevron can comment.

Wish I could go tonight, but I took Mr. Finer's request to come to tonight's show to heart-as I talked to an Irish woman at work and she promptly went online and bought tickets for her son and friends. Wonder
what the commision is???

I had an extra ticket that I could not sell so I gave it away to a stranger at the Hub Pub, that must have given me good karma!
When I went to my seat in the 20th row, some guy was sitting there next to his buddies and asked me if I wanted to trade tickets.
He traded me his front row center ticket for my 20th row!!! woohoo!!
I had an awesome time! The band was in great form!

Thought I was excited to see Shane, but then the lights came on and there was Phil C! I thought he was still 'taking a break' my night was made.

There were some audio issues in the beginning on the vocals, but those were fixed by the 4th song. Fiesta was fantastic. I hadn't liked the tune before, but it makes perfect sense live.

Highlights:

If I should fall from grace with God
Broad Majestic Shannon
Dark Streets of London
Sunnyside of the Street
Repeal of the Licensing Laws
Thousands are Sailing
Sickbed of Cuchulainn
Fiesta
Not very sporting to fire on an unarmed opponent. I thought you were supposed to be good. Aren't you the... 'good' man?

I joined this forum just to say how feckin' fantastic 3/19 was. I am still crying over not being able to go again last night, and still beaming over what a great time I had. And I went by myself! Got a ticket at the last minute. I can only imagine if I had been there with a bunch of people. I agree about the first couple of songs having sound issues; I thought it was just me but I guess it wasn't. And it definitely seemed to improve after a few songs. I could see some of the boys trying to get it right with the sound guy: "up, no down, little bit more" etc. Front-row was amazing! Can't wait until next March, or earlier if I can do it.

I took a lot of pictures and got some good ones. I will be putting them up on my Flickr page when I'm done fixing them up.

The sound at the Boston Orpheum, much as I love the old barn for all sorts of reasons, is uniquely problematic and we have never been quite able to overcome it, though architecturally it has much in common with similar, albeit larger theatres like Brixton Academy which have long since submitted to us.

Thank you Mr. Chevron and thank you Pogues for a great show on Wednesday. I will remeber it for a long time, I am sure.

I look forward to seeing you all again. Please come back to Boston next time.

Adios.

FYI:

Big telephoto taking pictures of indirectly lit people is haaard. Still - there is evidence of a Jamaica and a Seattle.

I have put several pictures up from the 3/19 show on Flickr if anyone is interested. Sorry they're not super-top-quality--I was afraid they'd take away my pro camera so I used a small digital. But a few came out pretty well. I have a bunch more (maybe 20?) to put up when I get done editing them.
