Re: Irish Eyes Are Crying review

Wow, that was pretty harsh. And not matched to what I've heard from other people who saw them at Roseland and not just from people here either, who might be more predisposed to speak favorably.

I don't get all the disparaging remarks about Shane. Most everyone has said he was in great form for this whole tour. I find it annoying that every time he trips or slips or misses a word "it's because he's drunk as usual." I trip on my own feet at least once a day--sometimes falling splat on the ground--and nobody assumes I'm drunk. Oh wait, probably people who don't know me and haven't actually talked to me at that moment DO assume I'm drunk. But since they have never said a word to me they don't know for sure and are just making invalid assumptions.

I'm not naive and I am sure he has his share of flubs caused by drink or whatever else he's doing but not all of every mistake he ever makes comes out of a bottle. Nor do they for anyone.

Well you know what they say opinions are like. And everyone's got one ...

Well it helps The Pogues make a bunch of money I guess. And they don't have to actually be any good anymore to thrill the moron masses that now make up their crowds. They are just phoning it in. The set list from night to night on this tour has stayed exactly the same and the songs just sound tired. They sound more like a band trying to sound like The Pogues than the actual Pogues themselves. At this point a Pogues cover band would probably be better.

While there are many criticisms I have grown used to over the years and accept as part of the price you pay for being part of an exceptionally good band, the flippant arrogance of this "fan review" really made me see red. I have never "phoned in" a performance in my life, not once. It is actually more difficult to go through the motions than to do the job well, which is one of the principal reasons I took last year off when I was ill. I hope you "moron masses" feel as angry about this wanker as I do.

alcohol-ravaged Shane can no longer sing the shit out of the songs.

well, right here, I doubt this person was really at this show.

There were so many backward caps on heads that night I lost track.

hmmm, I saw a sea of #2 and #1 haircuts.

And they were there more to get drunk than they were to listen to a band. Most everyone was double-fisting beers all night, this being a way to do something Irish for St. Patrick's Day - The Pogues and alcohol. The Roseland was packed with drunk pricks and we couldn't really get away from them. They oversell Roseland so much that the crowd was still packed tight even at the very back. ... This crowd was made up of people that were obviously trying to get as drunk as they could as fast as they could.

This person picks a night during St. Patrick's Day weekend in NYC to see The Pogues, and yet finds a crowd behaving in this manner offensive?

Well it helps The Pogues make a bunch of money I guess. And they don't have to actually be any good anymore to thrill the moron masses that now make up their crowds. They are just phoning it in. It is really a shame to see a band I really love become something so weak and pedestrian.

Now, I'm thinking, this person is very confused as to which band s/he thinks The Pogues are -- doesn't have a clue.

That bit about "phoning it in" was especially nasty and obviously not what was going on in those shows. I was in the front row in Boston and could see very clearly that nobody on stage was just passing the time until it was time to leave.

I'd just tell myself that nobody knows that guy's name. Nobody is wondering when his next project is going to be finished and when anyone will be able to get it. Don't worry yourself about him. He's entitled to his opinion, even if his opinion is WRONG. And if the people in the audience were the "moron masses," and he was in the audience, then logic follows that he is one of the morons. Perhaps he's got low self-esteem about his current state and feels validated by insulting others without cause.

Holy Crap. I sure am glad we picked Boston instead of New York this year. Someone must have sat the boys down and straightened them out after that show or maybe it was just the night off after the New York shows gave the boys a chance to get their act together after that "tired" performance this reviewer described.
