i'm just back from glasgow academy and you know how some things can make a show a classic for some and for others something else may happen to make it a bad night . jarvis cocker summed it up for me he once said ' well y'no , musically it may have been poor , but i got off with someone ive fancied for years so it was a great gig and a different person may have dropped all their money from their pocket making it a bad gig for them.
well, i think i've seen shane/popes/pogues often enough to know - as well as you do too - that a lot of it comes down to His state of 'mind' shall we say?
ONCE AGAIN SHANE DIDN'T LET HIS GLASGOW CROWD DOWN. THE MAN WAS ON FIRE!! At His best , toying with the crowd and sharing a joke, dancing with the mic stand, doing His pint on the forehead balancing act, winding up the band and of course taking about 10 mins to remember what part of the song he was at, while the band fill, keeping the momentum of the songs (particularly 'poor paddy' (WHAT YEAR IS IT? 46? 41? ETC.) AND B/O/Smoke).
My own 'great gig' analogy comes from the fact that ,although 'if i should fall' and 'streams' are among my faves, i feel shanes been starting shows with them forever (most times ive seen Him anyway - 20 yrs nearly n countin ). Also ive been shoutin from the front for him to sing 'transmetropolitan' for years- i think theres somethin special about a classic band playing the first song from their first album - the Zep the other day for example - and thats what made my night , FROM THE ROSY PARKS OF ENGLAND . . . TO THE SCOTTISH SHORES TODAY. i thank the pogues for making my night very special.
I had a magical night once again and i really hope fans waiting for the pogues wall of sound to visit their town will come away with the same euphoria i have the now (thats not the drink and drugs talkin now, easy people)
I've said it before an i'll say it again . . 'MON THE POGUES! ! ! !
