OK, here it is now that I've woken up (barely and with "Sunny Side of the Street" in my head). The evening started out at our fair city's newest pub, Stout. Please, if you ever get here the lads that own it deserve your patronage. They put my ipod on, served us well and cheered us as off we went. We convinced a bunch in our group that it would be in their best interest to get to the venue in time to see WEW. Despite the poor sound thing that was going on, he was brilliant! I called out for "Johnny Law" and he was stunned that someone knew his work. He played for far too short a time. As before, he was reverential to the Pogues between songs. Sooooooo, waiting Ollin to come on I wandered aound and who do I run into but WEW! He said "hey! I know you, you asked for a song" We talked and I ran and found my husband to introduce him and we talked some more. What a helluva guy. The kind you'd want to have over for dinner. Really. Next, Ollin, pronounced "O Leen" as I was informed by a nice guy who visits this forum (you know who you are). Kinda reminded me of Gogol Bordello in a way. I'd see them again.
Then....the Pogues!!!!!!! Personally, I've never seen Shane better. Despite more sound problems with the venue (fuck HOB for taking over what used to be a great place!) the show couldn't have been better. As I recall, for those of you that follow these things, the set list was what we had the first night in Seattle. The subbing guitarist did not stare at the floor the whole time, he was much more relaxed, especially when Darryl and James would switch sides and Darryl would really engage him. James was, well, James. At this point I was with people who'd never been to a Pogues show and they kept asking me "how does he do that?", "how much does that thing weigh?" and on and on... But back to Shane. He was perfect. He was understandable, truly. He was where he was suposed to be when he was supposed to be. He was, dare I say?, dynamic! When I realized no Medusans were coming to San Diego and the show got no publicity on the radio I worried that it might be cancelled. Then the friggin' hellstorm we had this week. But the place was packed, the air had cleared and the Pogues were pure magic. I don't know how I can say better what others have written before. Every time you see them its the BEST ONE EVER. That just keeps happening. Cheers to yez all for the rest of the tour.
On a somber note, because I can be a very somber gal, Philip is dearly missed.
