Where are you from? Will you be at the area of the "txoznas"? Why don't we set a meeting point?

Carlos Cantabria wrote:Anyway, here you have the link to a PDF document with information (only in Spanish) about all the concerts during the "Aste Nagusia" (it seems to be that ALL of them are FREE for the public).

Tomorrow I will post the translation of the piece of this document relative to The Pogues.

The Irish "The Pogues" and "Los Inconscientes" join the music schedule of the Aste Nagusia

The diversity of styles, the quantity of the gigs, the quality of the artists, always first-line, and above all the free access of the musical performances have made the 8 musical stages of Bilbao become the reference point during that week.

Botica Vieja

For the fifth consecutive year, in this Aste Nagusia 2007 we will have the "Botica Vieja" macro-area/macro-space the big musical ground of Bilbao that one more year will take a big variety of performances.

The schedule presents an spectacular beginning in charge of the Irish band The Pogues, with other groups and artists such as Dover or Barón Rojo.

Los Inconscientes will precede The Pogues on the Saturday 18th of August from 12 midnight on at Botica Vieja.

THE POGUES

The origin of the most radical and alcoholic band of the eighties dates from 1982, The Pogues began in London as Pogue Mahone.
(...)
A band radical at their punk way of interpretting the musical tradition of their country, mixing irish traditional folk with punk. (...) In 1996, six year after having replaced the singer of the band because of his addictions, the band disappeared. But once overcome his problems, Shane MacGowan joined again his old coleagues in 2001.

On Saturday August the 18th, the Pogues will open the Botica Vieja in the Aste Nagusia 2007., and it will be possible to enjoy the reunion of this band of radical revolutionaries.

Sorry for my not professional translation,
Carlos.

bilbao concert

Post Sun Aug 12, 2007 6:03 pm

:D

Hello. I'm a lifelong fan of the pogues. I'm from Galicia in Spain and the next week my girlfriend and I will be going to the concert in Bilbao. This year I have published a novel "El sendero de las mentes esparcidas" and i have dedicated it to shane mcgowan as since i was a child the lyrics of his songs have meant something to me. i would like to be able to give a copy of my book to shane (and the rest of the group) on saturday. i'm looking forward to finally seeing the pogues live as although i have all the records i have never been able to see them in concert.

I will pass this message on to Ross Duncan, our Tour Manager. It is not always possible to guarantee meetings with the band, the less so at Festivals and open air events. If that does not deter you, I know the band and/or Shane would be delighted to receive copies of your novel. Ross will email you.

Thank you very much, Philip. If it´s possible give you my book it would be marvellous, I understand it could be difficult to have a meeting with the band in this kind of concerts.

Hello Philip,
I am one of your bigest supporters in Spain..
Do you think it will be possible that you can play in Bilbao "the body of an American"?
It´s one of my favourites songs. Do you think it will be possible?
i´m disposed to brive you with Rioja Wine if necessary...
Thank you

Hiya "Urkiola"!

I have been to 4 gigs of the Pogues so far (the first one was at the Azkena Rock Festival, and the other three ones were the three consecutive gigs in London in Dec 2005). I remember that they played The Body Of An American at the Azkena, and I THINK that they played it also in the three gigs in London. So I suppose they will play it here in Bilbao again.

But the thing is that I'm afraid they won't play "Fairytale Of New York", because I suppose there will not be a woman to sing it... :-( Am I wrong, Philip?

Re: Information about the gig

Carlos Cantabria wrote:Just a casuality... I lived for 4 years in Bilbao (1.988-1.992), and my home was half a kilometer long from the area in which the gig will be performed.

Well, the area in which the gig will be performed is in a Bilbao suburb called DEUSTO.

In the other hand, the main area of the celebrations is "El Arenal", near the city town hall and the old part of Bilbao (where you can find many socialist independentist pubs). As I told you, the main area is "El Arenal", where the "txoznas" (political stalls where you can eat and drink) are, and I reccomend you all spend the night in that area (except for the concert of the Pogues, I mean).

"El Arenal" is more or less 3 km away from the area of the concert ("Botica Vieja", which means "Old Pharmacy"). There are many people who go WALKING from "El Arenal" to "Botica Vieja" for the concerts, it is just a 45 minutes walk without any chance of getting lost, because you just go with many people walking towards the same area (it will be similar to a demonstration).

The "Botica Vieja" is an outside car park which is disabled as a car park during the Bilbao Celebrations, because it is used for concerts. Of course, FREE ACCESS FOR EVERYBODY.

If you go there by car, I reccomend you to park it a little bit far from the concert area, because there is a lot of alcohol consumed in those celebrations and those gigs, and you can get a bad surprise when you go back to your car. So, you can park the car something far from the concert area (that Saturday and Sunday it is free to park the car in Bilbao), and then take the Metro (it will work all the night, with intervals of 15 minutes as most, as a civil servant of the Bilbao City Hall told me this morning when I phoned them).

Be careful at the time of planning, because I'm afraid this will be the first gig of the Pogues with more alcohol consumption among the audience than on stage. LOL.

Bilbao buses will work that night until 3 AM as the civil servant told me (I don't know how long intervals will be), while the Metro will work all the night, with intervals of 15 minutes as most (as he also told me).

In order to cover the distance between "El Arenal" and the "Botica Vieja", you can do it by bus if you are too lazy to go walking. But after 3 AM, there will be only Metro, with a Metro station near the "Botica Vieja", but there is no Metro Station near "El Arenal" (you would then also have to walk a little bit).

I think it would be good if we organized a meeting point at "El Arenal".

Those of you who are thinking of coming to Bilbao, please say it here, so that we can make ourselfes an idea about how many people from the Fora are coming.

See you soon, I hope my information is useful for you, and I will give any other information that I may have forgotten at the time of writting this post.

Carlos.

Gracias.

All right, thank you for correcting the erratum, it's much better with Metro station near "Arenal". Obviously, the civil servant of the City Council with whom I spoke gave me this inexact piece of information. Appart from that, can you confirm all the other information I have given is correct?

Thank you.

Carlos.

The undergrounds station to go to Botica Vieja is to 10-15 minutes, but it is possible to go walking from the Arenal (half an hour more or less). On Saturday night the underground will work every 10 minutes in Bilbao so it is possible to use without problems. But I recommend to be walking from a place to another one.
