The comical Google translator says:

The area of Tourism and Celebrations of the City council of Bilbao has closed with the Bilbao promoter Last Tour International the hiring of The Pogues and the Unconscious ones, that will replace Chayanne next the 18 of August in Old Pharmacy. According to municipal sources have informed, both groups will act at night from the twelve, after the singer portorriqueño annulled to the last week the recital that she had predicted for that day. The origin of the Irish band The Pogues goes back to 1982, in London, when they arose with the name “Pogue Mahone”. After their first single in 1984, “Dark Streets Of London”, was added to the tour of that year of “The Clash”. In 1985 they recorded, to the orders of Elvis Costello, “Rum Sodomy & The Lash” and, three years later, from published “If I Should Fall Grace With God”. These three discs conform the central nucleus of the discografía of the Irish band. During its trajectory, the group has characterized itself by its form to interpret folk traditional Irish with the punk. Their letters defend to the working-class and, in its day, they even criticized to the own Martgaret Thatcher. In 1996, six years after replacing the leader of the group by its addictions, the band separated, to return to join itself in 2001. On the other hand, “the Unconscious ones” are led by “Uoho”, founder of Silversmith and You and member of Extremoduro. Next to him, they comprise of the Bald band, the vocalista, and Quarry and Miguel, battery and bear of Extremodouro, respectively.

Pogues in Bilbao (Basque Country) FOR FREE!!!, 18 Aug 2007

Post Fri Aug 10, 2007 5:35 am

Why hadn't still anybody posted anything about this gig?

It is a concert for the first day of the "Aste Nagusia" ("Great Week") of Bilbao, all paid by the town hall, free for the audience.

I went to London in Dec 2005 just for the gigs of The pogues, paying for the 3 gigs... so it would be unforgivable for me to miss a free concert in a city which is just 90 minutes (on the road) away from my home.

Hadn't any of you heard of this gig?

Philip, could you give us some first-hand information (and also confirm that the gig is free for the audience)?

Sorry for my English
Carlos.

The Bilbao Town Council does appear to be paying our fee which is pretty cool and exactly why socialist town halls in Europe are such a great idea. So, as far as I can see, the concert is FREE to the public, but please Carlos, Pixi etc, can you try to find out if this is ACTUALLY true?? We'd hate to see some people turned away on the day because they had not paid some minimum fee etc. They know how to party in Bilbao. Be there!!!

LOL! Unfortunately, Bilbao city is not governed by any socialist party, but by a moderate socially center-right party, which is the PNV-EAJ ("Basque Nationalist Party"). Anyway, all the concerts during the Bilbao "Aste Nagusia" ("Great Week") are free because Bilbao celebrations attract hundreds of thousands of tourists, who consume in Bilbao's hotels, restaurants, etc.

Yes, although that's not actually the point I made precisely.

Information about the gig

Post Fri Aug 10, 2007 6:57 pm

Just a casuality... I lived for 4 years in Bilbao (1.988-1.992), and my home was half a kilometer long from the area in which the gig will be performed.

Well, the area in which the gig will be performed is in a Bilbao suburb called DEUSTO.

In the other hand, the main area of the celebrations is "El Arenal", near the city town hall and the old part of Bilbao (where you can find many socialist independentist pubs). As I told you, the main area is "El Arenal", where the "txoznas" (political stalls where you can eat and drink) are, and I reccomend you all spend the night in that area (except for the concert of the Pogues, I mean).

"El Arenal" is more or less 3 km away from the area of the concert ("Botica Vieja", which means "Old Pharmacy"). There are many people who go WALKING from "El Arenal" to "Botica Vieja" for the concerts, it is just a 45 minutes walk without any chance of getting lost, because you just go with many people walking towards the same area (it will be similar to a demonstration).

The "Botica Vieja" is an outside car park which is disabled as a car park during the Bilbao Celebrations, because it is used for concerts. Of course, FREE ACCESS FOR EVERYBODY.

If you go there by car, I reccomend you to park it a little bit far from the concert area, because there is a lot of alcohol consumed in those celebrations and those gigs, and you can get a bad surprise when you go back to your car. So, you can park the car something far from the concert area (that Saturday and Sunday it is free to park the car in Bilbao), and then take the Metro (it will work all the night, with intervals of 15 minutes as most, as a civil servant of the Bilbao City Hall told me this morning when I phoned them).

Be careful at the time of planning, because I'm afraid this will be the first gig of the Pogues with more alcohol consumption among the audience than on stage. LOL.

Bilbao buses will work that night until 3 AM as the civil servant told me (I don't know how long intervals will be), while the Metro will work all the night, with intervals of 15 minutes as most (as he also told me).

In order to cover the distance between "El Arenal" and the "Botica Vieja", you can do it by bus if you are too lazy to go walking. But after 3 AM, there will be only Metro, with a Metro station near the "Botica Vieja", but there is no Metro Station near "El Arenal" (you would then also have to walk a little bit).

I think it would be good if we organized a meeting point at "El Arenal".

Those of you who are thinking of coming to Bilbao, please say it here, so that we can make ourselfes an idea about how many people from the Fora are coming.

See you soon, I hope my information is useful for you, and I will give any other information that I may have forgotten at the time of writting this post.

Carlos.

A couple of sites with information

Post Fri Aug 10, 2007 10:52 pm

On the one hand, there is the site "www.astenagusia.com" with information in Spanish, Basque and English. But the webpage at the moment has several errors, I mean that most of the links don't work. I have phoned a couple of times today to the telephone number which appears on first page, and I have advised them of their mistake on their answer-phone. I hope they correct that mistake as soon as possible.

On the other hand, here you have this site belonging to the Bilbao City Council: http://www.bilbao.net, also with information in the three languages mentioned above. Once there, you select English language and go to Tourism section. The problem is that many of the things which appear there don't come in English.

Anyway, here you have the link to a PDF document with information (only in Spanish) about all the concerts during the "Aste Nagusia" (it seems to be that ALL of them are FREE for the public).

http://www.bilbao.net/astenagusia2007/musica_cast.pdf.

Tomorrow I will post the translation of the piece of this document relative to The Pogues.

Have a nice day,
Carlos.
