Yes, it wasn't the most remarkable consert by The Pogues but I couldn't be disappointed at all, because now I can say that I've seen the legends theirselves! It was an awesome feeling to sing along during most of the songs.

Regarding their playlist Mats, the one and only song you forgot as I know is Bottle of Smoke!

Thank you The Pogues, thanks everyone in Gothenburg!

Bought a ticket for almost twice the price of a 2 day pass. Somewhat expensive when The Pogues was the only band I wanted to see at Way out West. I travelled from Oslo, which took about five hours by car (Volvo 240!) and ended up in a craptastic "hotel" in Surte outside of Gothenburg: Service from hell! Something we surprisingly experienced at restaurants, bars, etc. too. No smiles, just grumpy swedes everywhere we went. Damn - lighten up! And what the hell was the deal about the beer-restrictions at the "festival"? Ridiculous! To top it all of it rained like crazy the minute we arrived at the venue - wet inside out from top to toe. (Ouch, guess I sound like a grumpy, premenstrual woman with a yeast infection. Yeah, yeah.)

Was it all worth it, though?

The first 4-5 songs were utter shit. I was afraid it was going to be a retarded rerun of The Popes filthy hoedown I witnessed in Bergen a couple of years ago. Shane was all over the place, the sound sucked harder than Jenna Jameson with a vacuum cleaner up her ass and the band sounded like a bunch of drunken spastics with Parkinson. Technical problems?

That was up until Shane walked off the stage and they performed Tuesday Morning. And what a total fucking turn around that song was. Everything came together like two hoes in a hot tub! They sound was great, the band played tight and Spider sang like Whitney Houston on crack - grrreat!

Shane came back onstage and eventhough he didn't exactly kick ass, the band/sound crew got their shit together and it went more or less upward from there. Maybe with a couple of exceptions like "The Sick Bed of(...)" which was a total mess. Did Spider give up playing the whistle for a while? Remember he just said "no, no, no" when Shane came in at the wrong place. And what the hell was he singing - it must have been another song? Haha!

There were some real highlights though, like Dirty Old Town, Bottle of Smoke and especially a glorious performance of A Rainy Night in Soho-which made everything worth it. Moments of true glory!

It was real disappointing that there were no encore, but if that was WoW's fault - fuck'em!

All "problems" aside: What an AWESOME setlist and an enjoyable experience, all in all!

And it is of course worth seeing these living legends no matter what, even if they have a bad day and everything surrounding the gig/festival is crap/expensive - whatever. Nothing beats the expectations, atmosphere and the party a Pogues-concert bring to town! :D

boy that was bad................

i thought the WOW gig was horrendous to be honest. The first 4 or 5 songs, shane was fucked, and yes though a few songs made up for it, it was to me soul destroying to watch. Spider from i could see was not a happy man. Wasnt there a few remarks about professionalism aimed at Shane after repeal, cashman walked on, shane says this is joey, spider remarked something and then says "ironically enough, this next one is called sick bed....." During Sally he was shoutng the words to shane almost in exhaustion/desperation.......before rainy night in soho, spider offered the song up to his wife, shane sarcastically says?? three cheers for the man in the hat, to which spider asked the crowd to cheer him on
i have seen them countless times and this was awful, though the crowd lapped it up, i think its expected now to see the pogues as some type of shambolic freak show

thanks for the memories guys but my love affair died friday night, sound problemot

that was one fuck up of a show at WOW. Wonder what Spider made of it all, from what i could tell, not very much......is it just good enough to have a wasted shane as some type of freak show fuck up? Though obviously thats what some people want to see, yes the sound was off, but boy was my heart broken

No MissWalshy, Shane should get a grip.

I was WERY dissapointed at the show, i mean i´w seen Pogues 7 shows the last 3 years and this was not even copareable to the others, THIS WAS SHIT.

I don´t care if the sound is bad, i can live with that but to see Shane Mess up Sick Bed and Fiesta totaly, is hartbreaking for me. He was out of tune for almost every song

I fellt ashame for the Pogues, sadly. Many of my friends went to see The Pogues for the first time and i have recomanded the band to so many people, and some of them turned to me afterwards and just laught, I was almost crying, thats how bad it was

We pay good money to see The Band preform so i think that the band should give the respect to the fans and at least try to give us the show that we deserve. Wheres all the energy gone? it´s allways there for the X-mas shows?????????????

You could hear a big difrence when Spider did Tuesday Morning, the band sounded good again but Good is not good anough for the Greatest band in the World.

At least for now i know it can´t get worse, i´m allready longing for the X-mas shows.

I´ll never give up the trust for The Pogues to be the best band in the world again. Don´t let us down boys, we know how good you can be.
Please come back to normal standard for X-mas. And come back to Sweden and show the audience here that this was only a bad day at work.

Lovely to meet all you freinds again at the preparty and at the show, 8)

Cheers

JamesFearnley wrote:sorry about the one song, giving something back and all, but, as sometimes happens, there were technical problems - that sounds like flannel, but isn't - and add to that what was strenuously reiterated to us as strict curfew we couldn't do any more than we did and we regretfully had to scratch Lullaby of London. More excuses that would be reasons: completely new crew because Jos and Murray were off on tour with someone else, a replacement guitar player for Philip and all the other attendant festival gremlins, a curfew, and all the bits of things that go to make the chutney which is the Pogues, all of which prompted Terry to describe the gig as 'going over the top of the trenches'. Ah, heck, we do the best we can, and in good faith. We're not out to take the piss.

I know your not out to take the piss. and i do understand some of your problems, reasons, but i still feel that we have the right to slag the show of if it´s not good, I mean as much as we love you guys (and praise you when your good)we do feel wery sad when we don´t get what we deserve as an audience.

WE STILL KNOW YOU`R GREAT, and hope to experience that in dec or at another show in Sweden.

Cheers

I just found this out on the youtube. I don't doubt that the show was lacking, but it doesn't really sound to me that Fiesta was all that bad. Better luck with it next time. I have to admit that I am now a bit nervous about the Seattle show, but I reckon it'll be a nice weekend at any rate.
