Pogues- Yeah! Starving Goliath...Not so much

Post Sat Mar 17, 2007 4:22 pm

Great show! I think the Pogues devious plan of sticking the worst band in America as the opener worked like a charm- it made the boys sound better then ever after having to sit through a geeky high school jazz club's version of jam rock. I'm still debating what was worse- the drive there or subjecting myself to Starving Goliath and their "charismatic" front man who looked like he was up past his bed time, their wanky freestyle guitar riffs, and their general lack of any sort of discernable song structure. Next time throw a punk band up there and leave the Phish lovers with their stinking petula drenched buddies at home.

We came from Richmond, Virginia, averaging 30 miles an hour (you do the math), but well worth it. Mr. Chevron, our most sincere thanks for dedicating Kitty to us, it really made for a tremendous occasion.

What a treat for you Philly folks. I'd have loved to heard that during the Orpheum show. I would guess they probably have a surprise or two in store for the final NY show tonight.

well, after waiting 17 years or so, I finally got to see Shane and The Pogues together,
after having seen Shane w/The Popes and The Pogues w/o Shane, at their last gig in
Philly back in I guess 1993 or 4, at the Trocadero (Waiting for Herb)

I loved every minute of it. I guess other people who have seen some of these reunion shows have gotten used to it, but it is really something to first see all the guys together on stage, and the cheer when Shane appears. But really what struck me during the night was good the band sounded. Actually on many of the tunes better than the albums. Like on Sunnny Side, Spider seemed to be playing some extra riff on the whistle that I don't think I ever heard on the album, or maybe it got buried in the mix, but it sounded great. And Body of an American, which may be my single most favorite Pogues song - it is just so perfect - somehow was just so much more "meatier" than the recording.

And the old folkie in me loved hearing Greenland Whale Fischeries - a song I first heard on a Weavers recording - and Poor Paddy. and Kitty - what a beautiful song, and one I never thought Shane would be able to quite sing again, but he sounded fucking good!

Well, Phil, thanks for coming to Philly!

My god, you guys sounded phenomenal friday night in philly. it made the loooong drive up well worth it. yes, greenland whale fisheries was great. eveything was just top shelf guys. thanks for a great sounding show.

too bad the electric factory is such a shitty place, with shitty sound, and shitty bouncers. t'would have made it even that much more enjoyable. $20 for parking...fuck the electric factory. $5.35 for 10 ounces of yeungling. $8.00 for 10 oz of guiness !!! shit on the electric factory. never thought i'd say this, but even though the borgata ran out of beer last year and even though it is in atlantic city, the asshole of the country...it was still a better venue.
thanks guys. i hope to see you again next year

I was wondering about the parking situation as well. I don't recall them charging $20 to park before, I kind of thought the guys working the lot were running a scam and pocketing the extra cash. With all the snow people didn't really have anywhere else to go so they were forced to park there. There weren't any signs with the price posted so we pretty much had no other options other than to believe them and pay up. I was so mad I gave the guy a $20, said "Thanks", then parked in a very angry manner.

There's nothing more valuable than a parking lot in the right location. There are lots around Fenway Park that get $60.00 and they have no shortage of takers. I paid $25 to park last week when they were at the Orpheum and that included a 20-minute 5 block walk from the lot to the show.

Parking lots and Dunkin Donuts. Gold Mines.
