I just got in. More later, I have an early meeting in the morning. A fucking excellent show. The Tossers were great. The Pogues were spot on. I met up with Carmen and her daughter in the VIP area. Met James and talked a little after the show. Never got to Spider because Roseland people kept pulling him away. Philip had not come out so I never got to say hi in person (thank you so much Philip!.... and I strode around Midtown all day with my brand new pork pie hat) :D 8)

Hi all,

I was at the St Patrick's Night show and it was my first Pogues show. I have seen Shane a lot with the Popes, but I was abroad last year when the Pogues played in New York. So I made sure to go this time. It was superb. Everything I could have wanted. The raining beer was beautiful. I didn't think the crowd was that rough actually. I have seen rougher crowds at Popes shows. And really if it bothers you just move back, that jumping around is only at the front. All in all, I enjoy the mass of bodies swaying to and fro. The show really was grand, and it seemed that the whole band was really zoned in and Shane sang his guts out. Such a great band. Glad I got to be there.

Cool photos, and sounds like a great night. :)

Greenland Whale Fisheries is an excellent addition to the set. I've seen Shane and the Popes do it, but I'd love to see it done by the Pogues now.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

My itinerary says 3200 capacity, though this was almost certainly exceeded in order to take care of those who exchanged their Wednesday night tickets for another night.

The Roseland is a big ole dancehall most famous for the Dance Marathons during the Depression, as portrayed in the movie They Shoot Horses Don't They?

It seems that the bandmembers really had their heart in it and they sounded excellent.

Victoria Clarke was in the audience. She was sitting at one of the tables that was up on that stage/platform thingy that was off to the right of the main stage (to your right when you are facing the stage)

Scott, is that you? North Carolina, me too! A buddy and I drove up Saturday for the show then drove back Sunday. 1052 miles!

I still remember Gig Youngs performance. It's a movie, like The Boys In The Band,I watched on t.v. while really too young to process everything properly.Fonda was amazing.

Cool double feature coming up.

not a pleasant surprise that it was absolutely freezing outside

There were some posts about the pushing etc...
Some things struck me as really funny at that show and I thought I'd share.

1. The crowd surfing started in earnest half way through Lullaby of London. And it was as if the entire crowd, and possibly the band, understood around the same time exactly how absurd that was.... so it was just the right thing to do. And it increased from that point on as the tempo picked up. At times I swear Shane was just kinda grinning and orchestrating the chaotic movement of people from his throne.

2. Some guy went quickly over the barrier -- just caught the movement out of the corner of my eye -- and he didn't get my full attention until he was airborne, over the barrier and into the crowd. It was a beautiful maneuver of stealth and gymnastics, the way he launched with his knees totally bent, in a crouch, and then leaned back, feet on the absolute edge of the stage, and with one shot the legs went straight, his body uncoiled like a spring and he was launched twenty feet back into the crowd. I don't remember the song, but Shane was sitting there, obviously impressed, and gave the guy his due at the end of the song.

The bouncers standing in the huge barrier gap were being a little over-zealous with crowd surfers (which isn't a surprise). I saw one guy get pulled down into the gap headfirst by one of the goons. Looked painful. I think that sight kept me from going up, even though I could have used the breather.

And thanks to whoever passed me that joint.

Pictures from the St. Patrick's Day Show at the Roseland

Post Tue Mar 20, 2007 7:15 pm

Does anyone have pictures from Saturday's show that they could post or link to? I didn't bring my camera because my friend said Roseland confiscates them, but of course once we got inside alot of people had them and were snapping away. I'd be grateful to anyone who shares!

Thanks!

Ah the jackass in the santa suit! He made it really hard for me to enjoy the first 20% or so of the show, what with him knocking girls over and getting into fights with their boyfriends every four minutes. It was hard to dance with my feet firmyl planted so that guy wouldn't knock me down. Finally I tapped someone in the front row and told them to get security to get rid of the asshole, which they did. We cheered as the bouncers dragged him away by his neck.

Other than that, it was a rougher crowd than when I saw them on St. Patrick's Day last year. Or maybe it was my spot on the crowd. Last year I was in front, with only one guy in front of me. This year I was about 4 people back, getting jossled around--sometime all in good fun, sometimes by assholes who clearly just wanted to steal my spot.

So much fun! Here's hoping I get to see the Pogues again within the next few years.

Yeah, our section dubbed him "bad santa" and were equally pleased to see him go! All in all though, an amazing show!
