My girlfriend and I flew into Boston from St. Louis for the March 10th show. We're both teachers, so we had to pick a weekend even though the Chicago shows were closer. It was my first time seeing the band though I've listened to them since about '88. Also my first trip to Boston and the Avalon.

Bottom line: killer show -- the band was great, the crowd was great, even the weather was great.

I was on the floor exactly two feet behind the flying beer. I would have liked to have been closer (for the band, not the flying beer), but I wear glasses, so it's either see the band or mangle the specs.

A couple of points I don't think have been brought up:

After "Young Ned" Shane said, "Oliver Cromwell was the first republican." Which, when you think it over, sort of makes sense.

Apparently (as per my girlfriend) the Avalon has a great ladies room -- couches and its own bar, even. I didn't see her for about the latter half of the show.

Some favorite moments: Shane's flying microphone and his "Sunny Side" miscues. Terry asking for peanuts (which didn't make any sense to me at the time until an earlier post cleared it up). The crowd during the impromptu "Dirty Old Town" sing-a-long. Spider's flying fingers. And . . . every glorious second of every song.

I hope to see the boys again next year, maybe twice this time.

I forgot about the hat -- it looked just like Spider's. How about the hat Shane wore at the beginning? The cowboy (cowgirl?) hat. Was it pink? I remember him saying "I'm not gay."

The gay comment was about the night before when he asked if the hat made him look gay and the crowd seemed to think so.

Line of the night was Spider replying: "It depends what you mean by gay."

The hat looked like a red leopard print. It was a very impressive hat, as far as hats go. I'd like to find the haberdashery that supplied it.
Did the old songs taunt or cheer you, and did they still make you cry?

What an incredible show on march 10th at Avalon! Best performance i've ever seen and most amazing energy in the room throughout. From the moment straight to hell started thumping with the bass drum...which is about when we all got inside, the place was electric. Making it up to the first couple rows during streams of whiskey was the best decision i ever made and i fought hard to stay there throughout. By around the third song or so Shane had caught wind of my rowdy screams and scally cap spinning and called for my hat. I was in shock for a moment as I never thought I would be so close to interact with anyone in my favorite band of all time...but then I realized what a great moment it would be and threw my hat up on stage to shane. I will say im a bit surprised he caught it...and very proud to say that he wore it for a large portion of the show instead of the silly mexican hat. I do wonder if anyone out there has any good pictures of Shane sporting my cap??? The songs were all standout compared to the other few times I saw them, including one week later on st paddys day in nyc. I 'm sure many others lost their voices for a week like myself, but it was all worth it to belt out every rowdy yell and words to the songs. Being the rowdy one that I am, the only way a pogues show could have been any better is if they had played WILD CATS, downinthegroundwherethedeadmengo and waxies dargle!! Also, I really would love to see some more waiting for herb(HAUNTING MOSTLY) & poguemahone representation(anniversary, tosspint, pont mirabeau perhaps?) ...but who am i to request a personal setlist. I had no idea that a live show could be such an amazing experience especially after last year at orpheum when even good seats were so far away I had no idea what the pogues even looked like in person. Definitely great memories that will be talked about forever by us all in attendance...THANK YOU POGUES!!!

Let's work on contrast a bit: here's another hell of a review :)

Jeez, I didn't realize I am the wrong target audience for "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda", it was ok when the Pogues played it at the Opera House in 1989, when most of us were alot younger and drunker. She was right though, they didn't play "New York Fairy Tale" (sic).

I like the South Boston-Belfast comparison, although I think there are only
a few murals in Southie. (Plus a few Most Wanted Whitey Bulger Posters).

He probably did it by force of habit, you know, back in the days when he was the Pogues stage roadie.
