March 10, 2007 Avalon, Boston - reviews

Post Sun Mar 11, 2007 4:02 am

I couldn't wait to post!! AWESOME AWESOME Show :D

I will post a full report on Monday but some highlights-

Band was tighter and better than ever.

Shane looked and sounded great.

Everyone on stage looked like they were having a great time.

Set list was probably the same, we did get Boys of Kilmichael at the beginning of the second encore.

Mr. Chevron broke the no smoking law during Rainy Night.

Shane introduced Sunny Side, but it was time for Kitty

Shane introduced SunnySide again, but it was time for Sayonnara.

Finally got it right the third time.

Shane also introduced SickBed early.

Dirty Old Town-Shane came in early, band stopped, but the crowd kept
singing the first verse. After we were done, the band played from the start.

Bono didn't show up (at least on stage, there were rumors in the paper)
but no one cared it was such a great show.

If you have any doubts about going, please trust me, as a twenty year plus
fan, they have never been better!!

For them as needs to know these things, The Bicycle Michael actually kicked off the first set of encores. And Bono is as welcome as anyone else to our shows, but not our stage.

Sorry about the Bicycle mishap. I am exhausted, have to drive home
and go to bed.

Hope you enjoyed this show Mr. Chevron. It must be pretty special
to look out at us lot and see us singing along to 1000s and raising a glass
to JFK :D

(The Bono info was from today's Herald, didn't see him, but I could
of sworn that was Daryl in Boston Beerworks before the show!)

Out of the two I saw last year, and the two I saw this year (so far) this was the best one in a string of great ones. Tonight I held on to the barricade in front of the stage in front of a rather large bouncer who I saw pick up several people who had been crowd surfing. I behaved, of course. I'm too um, large and old to mosh anymore, regardless. We actually had a beer vendor right up there who never made it past being right in front of me for all the customers who required his services. Terry asked him for some peanuts, but , sadly, he had none. Thank Christ they didnt have beer vendors when I was 23 the first time I saw the Pogues!

Tomorrow should be another topper. The last time I will see the Pogues in my 30's (40 on Thurs.) but hopefully not the last time.
Did the old songs taunt or cheer you, and did they still make you cry?

Probably the best one of the set thus far. Got nearly up front again(2nd row) the only negative was nearly getting in a fight with some drunken ass and then having to get a talking to from the bouncer. I felt like I was in primary school.

I was wondering what was going on there: he was the being the aggressive one, and next thing I know you're wandering off with mr. bouncer man.

All in all, incredible frickin' show. The false start to Dirty Old Town was an amusing moment made sublime by the crowd's carrying the song aloft and along through the first verse.

And I know it's been asked before, but can anyone identify the music played prior to the band coming on (and I am not talking about the Clash, you wags) and who has the responsibility for it...the band or the venue? There is this middle-eastern tune with what sounds like trumpets that's very dranatic and very good.

Well not me, Phoist, I was just sweating in my ill-advised leather coat, and as I said, the security gentleman was BIG and right in front of me. I've got children!!

Aye I wish I had known it was going to be so mild walking back. I would have left the sweatshirt home. I must have lost 15 pounds in the last 3 nights with all the sweat.

Paul Scully tells me that the music he has been playing in the interval is a multi-artist double CD called "NU EUROPE - From the Old Countries - The Best of New Roots Music". We tried to identify the track that appeared most popular - the "one with the brass" and we think it's probably "Sie Dan" by Attwenger featuring Boban Markovic. Turns out Jem Finer has seen Markovic play live in London two.

NU EUROPE is on the Manteca label

Yes, and I asked for a Kia-Ora and Andrew wanted a choc-ice. but the lad was woefully understocked. Beer only.

Amazon.com has a few used for $7.47 plus shipping, which is far less than the $22 list price. I just ordered one and noticed at least one more seller with it available at the $7+ price....
