I really think the question should be 'Why have The Pogues been playing exactly the same set, give or take about 4 songs since they reformed in 2001??' Hardly the sign of a great live band is it?

You so crazy!

If you need "signs" to prove to ya' that THE M!@#$%^&*?!@# POGUES are the best, when it's right in front of your face....well, you're dumber than you sound.

2 simple reasons:
1. Because the band members feel passionate about these songs
2. Because people such as myself, my uncles, cousins, firefighters, policemen, politicos, bus drivers, rail workers and office jockeys buy the fucking tickets you meathead!!!

My question to you: Why do the ghosts of Elvis Costello continually post such shit???

Apologies for coming across as speaking on behalf of the band.
Let me rephrase #1 by saying, "I'd guess the band members feel passionate about these songs."

Same set list in Boston yesterday I managed to snag Spider's copy. God bless that very nice lady that grabbed it down for me.

I KNOW yer not supposed to feed trolls, but JESUS I cannot keep my mouth shut now.

Have you ever SEEN the Pogues, dear "guest"? I'd wager not, as the Pogues are without any shadow of a doubt one of the best live bands that's ever existed. Switching the songs around or changing up a lot of them would not have any effect on that status.

If the setlist was a dud I'd stand by and listen to you whine. As it is very nearly perfect, I will not.

We'd all love to see the Pogues become a working band which writes and records new music and adds the best of it to their live show. HOWEVER, them being among us in ANY form (let alone at the height of their performing powers, which they ARE) is a secular miracle, and I can't stand by and listen to your drivel. Don't think they're a GREAT live band? You're either deaf or daft, but it IS your perogative. Don't go. More tickets for the Faithful.

Hey, I used to be a dyed-in-the-wool Rolling Stones fanatic. They've been playing the same setlist for nigh unto 45 years. I'm also a lifelong Bob Dylan fan. He changes his setlist every night, often playing versions of songs his fans don't immediately recognize. Both approaches have their merits and drawbacks. Neither has ANY effect on their status as live performers, at least not in my book.

If I'd seen the Pogues 100 times I might feel differently. As I'm turning blue holding my breath for my SECOND Pogues show, I don't give a damn WHAT they play. I know it's going to be absolutely sublime.
Disclaimer: These are my opinions and not fact as realised in these here United States, lest I give my friends the idea that everyone thinks like me.

** The Auld Triangle was really good. I have a live version sung by Liam Clancy with the Clancy Brother in their hey day and this version is like all of Shanes and the Pogues interpertations just bringing it into the present.

The same set...

Post Fri Mar 09, 2007 8:15 pm

There was some quote about the difference between common and genius and that we only have one, maybe two great ideas and the differentiator is the genius can take the same idea and reinvent it over and over.

The Grateful Dead took the same approach as the Pogues. The had a bigger song book and Robert Hunter who wrote the lyrics (Jerry did the music) was not on tour with the band so he had the time and not the pressure. The approach was the same and the Dead were arguably one of the best touring bands around.

Another thing about the Dead is they played "Not Fade Away" at nearly every show so what is the point about the Pogues opening with Streams?

I would hope the Pogues could borrow some of that kind of stuff from the Dead to carry on. The dead rarely had any billboard "hits", they also were not dependent on the record industry because they made their millions touring and had the dead heads always.

Yes, i have seen THE POGUES in excess of 40 times and will continue to go and see them. The point i was trying to make is surely there are other songs that the band could play. These annual tours are starting to lose their spark as in the main we know what song is coming next now as the set list is always the same. Phil's setlist thread for CHICAGO...Look away now!!! why???? we already know what it is...thats the point i am making. There are loads of classic Pogues tunes which they dont currently play which i'm sure we would all love to hear. I think if Phil didnt post on these boards (and its great he does), i'm sure the conversatinos would be a little different.

But we like the songs we play. Let me rephrase that - we ESPECIALLY like the songs we play.

Ok, I can see that point. Not to keep bringing up the Dead by it is very similar. If the Dead did 4 nights in some place you would never know what songs of the 500+ in the song book they would do on a given night but each night was significantly different as they could draw from a good portion of that book at will. Some were standards and all but ya just never knew for sure and even then the arrangements were different. Stella Blue was not the same in 1987 as it was in 1972 for instance.

There are pro's and cons to this though. The Dead constantly toured and had that kind of familiarity to improvise plus they had elements of Jazz that lent itself to improvisation. The Pouges I don't think could pull that off as their tours are not an always on proposition.

With the Pougues they would have to put together a new show and rehearse that with the way they schedule tours.
