I really wouldn't mind calling Bregovic my countryman as his music is great - but unfortunately, his home is a bit more to the south, in the Balkans. :)

Ah, my mistake then - the movie was certainly Czech though.

The movie Underground?! Somebody here is really obsessed with placing the Czech Republic in the Balkans... Sorry to disappoint but neither Kusturica is my countryman. And it's not only a long way to Tipperary, but it's also a long way to the Balkans from here. :)

To keep on topic, here's a fans review of one of the Chicago shows:

We jaunted up to Chicago last night for a quick Pogues show. Nice contrast between this set and the shows we saw back in London ‘04: this time around, the boys played some songs not on the greatest hits list and they were a bit looser on stage and with one another. Shane, especially, seemed like part of the band again, not just the recalcitrant frontman they had to wrangle under tightly-controlled circumstances. The venue was a crumbling beauty, much like Shane, but the vibe was kind of weird - lots of little scuffles breaking out, and damn if I didn’t get shoved pretty hard by a guy twice my size who really wanted to push people out of the way as he walked behind us with more than enough room for his big ugly head. So yeah, Shane, still a glorious ruin, and the ceiling of the Congress Theatre featured this ornate dome centered with a glowing red orb, so it appeared we were all linking arms and singing “Sally Maclennane” under God’s own bloodshot eyeball.

I'll just take a moment to reiterate how amazing Monday night was! Everyone in top form and (as mentioned) nice additions to the set. The venue was rustically charming and perfect for a Pogues show. It was great to meet so many people, especially many of the Chicago folks who were seeing their first show. Special thanks to miked for sending us to Celtic Crossings for that session Sunday night. A pleasure as well to meet Territa and her crew in person. CdnSteve and his lovely Mrs. qualify as two of the most fun (and funny) people I've met. The whole band..just ON! Last, but never least, the indefatigable, charming, kindhearted and passionate Philip. You're the best! Thank you.

Ah, forgive my American geographical weakness and replace every Czech reference with Yugoslavia and we should be on track.

The show was amazing as amazing could be, for me at least. I am glad the crowd intesity picked up as the set went on. The venue, though dilapidated, was in perfect mesh with the Pogues. Really would anyone want to see them at a place where you would be afraid of spilling a beer? Speaking of beer, the prices were atrocious, luckily I found a nice little pub on Artimage that kept me in the right mindset after the show. The Pogues changed my life as I know they have changed so many on here and it was just great to see them on stage so close to home. Thank you Pogues, one and all for a great set and for bring Poor Paddy into the setlist!

Drink to it with Czech (NOT American) Budweiser and everything is forgiven. ;)

It was "Straight To Hell" by the Clash. A great number to bring on the Pogues.

Paul Scully is delighted you all approve of his musical taste and tells me that the music he has been playing in the interval is a multi-artist double CD called "NU EUROPE - From the Old Countries - The Best of New Roots Music". We tried to identify the track that appeared most popular - the "one with the brass" and we think it's probably "Sie Dan" by Attwenger featuring Boban Markovic. Turns out Jem Finer has seen Markovic play live in London two.

NU EUROPE is on the Manteca label.

And yes, The Clash "Straight To Hell", with Joe's brilliant non-sequitur lyrics has been our entrance music for over 3 years now. Shane's idea, and we've yet to find a better one.

To Philip and the rest of the boys, thanks so much for a fantastic show Monday night. Even better than the 3-18 show in New York last year. Thought Shane sounded wonderful on the ballads, especially "Kitty" and "Rainy Night in Soho." And you are always the dashing gentleman on stage, Philip. Good luck on the rest of the tour and I hope to see you again soon.

Girl in a Coma kicked ass, by the way.

It usually happens in "Repeal Of The Licensing Laws", though episodes sometimes break out elsewhere too.

I went to both shows and had a great time.

Thanks to all the Pogues for two fantastic shows.

Can't really add much to the comments everyone else has posted; but I do want to thank you Mr. Chevron for the dedication to that great Irish American Patrick Fitzgerald. That just made the night perfect!
