The other Pogues (and Ella) made it to Dublin by 7pm as I kinda knew they would. It was a good show and a great atmosphere and all I know is I will never do two shifts again. You start to feel these things when you're almost 50. I am shattered! Good night!

No. You're great. In fact, better than most. I'm just wondering about all of the fine Medusans who represented tonight. I predicted magic. Was I right? Or was it a cookie cutter from Brixton? I think not. ???? Just a hunch.

Very glad to hear you made it. Was telling everybody who'd listen about it all last night, and wondering what happened.

Sorry for you, Jack and Mick. Damn weather.

Weather's still bad, so have safe journeys home, everyone.

Dear Mr. Chevron,

That was, without doubt, the best, best gig I have ever been at. I loved every single second of it, from the first strains of Trouble Pilgrim to the last note of Fiesta. What a night :D :D :D

The Radiators were in top form and for me Hinterland, Huguenot and Television Screen, which was superb, were the highlights but every note of every song was on fire.

The Pogues, and Shane in particular, were in excellent form. As has been siad before, to hear Kitty live was a real treat. Again, every song was spot on but for me Kitty, Rainy night and of Course Fairytale were the hightlights. But the real belter was Thousands which was unreal.

To play 2 gigs in the one night is good going. To play 2 superb gigs boarders on the superhuman. You are indeed a Legend and I thank you sincerly for all you do for all of us.

Thanks,

Bud.

A fan's blog review:

Judith Ann wrote:Christmas with The Pogues

Tonite I paid 50 euros to go watch one of the most famous drunken toothless irishmen stumble around a stage.

It was worth it.

There was more energy in the room than I've ever felt. He didn't need to sing because there were about 5000 Irish people singing and dancing for him. Imagine the energy of any rock/punk/metal show you've ever been to, then imagine that the audiance is made up of boys/girls/men/women ages 16-70 all having the same amount of energy singing along with Shane MacGowan. The crowd was something else, most people were wearing red and green, even the punks had died their mohawks red or green. And once the music started, out of now where people in the audiance pulled out huge Irish flags which then "rode the crowd" continually the whole show. In between songs I'd watch the crowd of full of drunken Irishmen hug and yell how much the loved eachother.

They did two encores with one of the final songs being the famous Fairytale of New York. "Snow" fell from the ceiling while they all danced around stage and the crowd went mad...I was also up and dancing. I couldn't let the old women out dance me!

I can't say I feel too sorry for Shawn MacGowan, but he has made some great music and its a shame he can't sing it the way he use to.

Pogues Point Depot - Hawon!

So last night I received one of my Christmas presents in the form of a Pogues ticket from my brother Gavin. As usual, I didn't really think about the gig, or the set, or actually seeing the band until right before I left the bar for the venue. I got excited, needless to say.

We were lucky enough to be strapped with pit bands on the way into the Point, which was great. The pit had a decent crowd in it, and loads of room too. Greater. Anyway the Pogues were fantastic. Of course, I can hear you ask "what state was that lig Magowan in?" - well, he was in much better shape than you'd expect, actually. While he had a stool, he didnt sit down at all, and mainly stood smoking a fag, wobbling his head about and wearing a long leather coat.

At one point, during White City I think, he started doing a wee pointy dance and staggering about, which was hilarious. They did a great set, and jaaaysis they can fairly play. Probably the best mondolin, banjo and accordion you've ever heard comes out of those lads.

Magowan was ducking off stage after every few tunes, and at one point returned and seemed to say "this is making me vomit". I enjoyed that. Spider Casey (who's a proper Laaahndahn punk all right) sang Tuesday Morning, which was great.

The geetar chap sang Thousands are Sailing too. They did two encores, including a great Fairytale of New York with the banjo player's daughter singing the McColl parts.

They actually made a fuckup going into the last chorus, which raised a laugh onstage and off. Magowan and the lil' lady waltzed as paper snow erupted from huge fans on the stage. I got a bit of an oul Christmassy buzz at that.

They finished with Fiesta, complete with Shane and Spider bashing themselves on the head with beer trays in the Pogues tradition. Magowan sauntered about, smacking all the mikes onto the ground with his tray as the tune clattered to a finish, and then did something brilliant.

As the song ended in a big long flourish, he picked up a fag off his stool and started non-chalantly looking for his lighter on the floor, as if he was in his living room. Even though a few thousand people were screaming at him. He even said to a young culchie who was up on his mate's shoulders at the front: "put your shirt back on". Amazing band, class gig. The best thing about them is that they outdo their audience's expectations, which is a VERY rare thing.

As I recall the set included:

Sick bed of Cuchulainn
Lullaby of London
Bottle of Smoke
Turkish song of the Damned
Rainy night in Soho
Fairytale of New york
Dirty old town
The Irish Rover
White City
Tuesday Morning
The lads from county Hell
Fiesta
Poor Paddy
Thousands are Sailing

Great stuff!

I am so glad that all the band made it to Dublin and that the gig went really well.

Just wish I could have been there, would have loved to see The Radiators supporting the Pogues.
