I mangaed to miss the Pogues when they did their christmas gigs last year which I was gutted about. I didn't even do anything on the nights they were playing either. I think this was probably due to money and buying christmas presents for a girl who wanted christmas presents more than she actually wanted me. So being free of all that and having more money I made pretty damn sure I attended tonight!
I made sure I missed Larrikin Love tonight. I heard them before and they sound like a cross between The Levellers and Babyshambles. A band to avoid forever I think. I got there in good time for The Pogues just as they were packing up the equipment for Larrikin Love.
After a short wait the anticipation was kicking in, How rowdy would the crowd be? How Much beer will I get covered in? How drunk will Shane be? As Streams Of Whiskey began it became apparent that it was gonna be a good lively crowd without too much bother. Not too much beer went flying in fact very little indeed. Shane was led onto the stage as usual but could stand. Infact he hardly seemed drunk at all. He was a lot more thorough with the words and even danced a bit. He was clean shaven alert and looked really good all dressed in black. Musically it was the tightest and most together Pogues gig I'd seen. It could've done with being a bit louder mind. My favourite Pogues song A Pair Of Brown Eyes sent a few shivers down me and there were quite a few setlist changes from the previous times over the last couple of years. A few songs I'm not so familiar with but we did get Kitty which sent a shiver down my spine and Repeal Of The Licencing laws which had me Jigging madly! The songs not sung by Shane sounded better than ever. Tuesday Morning is becoming a big favourite now and I need to own this song! Thousands Are Sailing is always one of the highlights and sounded ace being one of the songs of the night. Later in the set a few twats decided to stand near me. I think you had to be a cunt in order to be friends with these people. They stood with their back tot he crowd and talked during the set then bumped into everyone in an annoying way when the fast songs came in. Fuckers!! it didn't ruin it though the gig was far too good for that. Sickbed Of Cuchulainn had me Jumping madly. For the encores it was more of the better known songs. Sally MacLennane set everyone crazy. Rainy Night in Soho sent more chills down spines and Irish Rover produced more frenzies. For the second encore we were sposed to get Poor Paddy which I would love to hear again, But Shane even thought more sober than ever before sang Auld Triangle after the intro to poor Paddy was played, so the band played along to Auld Triangle. Of course this is another excellent song and one of the moments of the set. This was followed by Fairytale Of New York. One of the greatest ever christmas songs and one I never get sick of hearing. Infact this is the first time I've felt chrismassy this year. Some girl came on to sing it with him. I can't remember who but she had a beautiful pwoerful voice. Shane danced with her at the end of the song and it was just brilliant! More frenzied dancing came for set ender Fiesta! that songs just fills me with utter joy.

Don't know if you have any plans of continuing doing these kinds op reunion shows, but if you are, remember that in the Netherlands you could easily sell out a couple of shows!

Nice touch with the hug between Ella and Jem at the end of FONY.
