BRIXTON: MissWalshy's Birthday Bash DEC 18

Post Mon Dec 18, 2006 11:52 pm

One of the things I really love about a Pogues audience is how it unfailingly sets out to have a great time, the best possible time. You excelled yourselves tonight. We weren't bad either.

You were brilliant tonight, Philip! Like the red shirt! Thousands was really powerful as was Ned and Shane seemed on top form. So many great people in the audience as well - top night, thanks so much!

I have browsed this forum for the best part of three years, never feeling the need to add my tuppence worth, but tonight, I am going to.

Tonight was my 21st visit to a Pogues show. I go back to the mid 80s nights of boozy chaos. I have to admit being a tad disappointed last year, I thought it was all a bit tired and I "declared" at 20.

However, I couldn't resist just one last venture. So once again I found myself back at The Academy. Having read the reviews here of the MEN show, I was a bit worried about what would be served.

No worries, in a nutshell, I was treated to probably the best Pogues gig I have ever seen. There wasn't a weak track amongst it, and I do believe Shane was sober!! Polished and clipped are not words normally associated with Pogues gigs, but tonight they can be. An utterly astounding night that made me feel 20 years younger. Crowd brilliant, band brilliant, night brilliant.

Thanks everyone!

a marvellous night. kicked off s by getting some great jerk chichen down my neck soon after leaving the tube and having a pint with the great Misswalshy at the canterbury arms, through a great set by larrikin love and on to The Pogues.
Cracking set gentlemen.Kitty, Dirty Old Town, Lullaby of London, Thousands Are Sailing, Sickbed and Rainy Night were absolutely fucking stuning tonight. The rest was none too shabby either. And theres something unspeakably beautiful about heariing Fairytale of New York played live. by The Pogues, at this time of year.

Thanks for a great night out.

I had a great time last night at Brixton. I have been for the last 3 years now and i think that last night was the best musically. One thing that i did notice was a shift in attitude in the crowd. I was at the front (in the pit) and the good nature seems to have been missing last night. Where in previous years there was a comaradarie at the front and a lot of drunken hugging at the end of songs, last night seemed to have more of an edge to it. Other people may disagree, but for my money it was different. The pit did seem an awful lot bigger than previous years, so maybe that played a part?
I still had a marvellous evening, and the sight of Phil guzzling a can of beer backstage before returning for the second encore filled me with envy. It was bloody roasting at the front and i was gasping for a drink.
Top night, but i am left wondering how many more we will be treated to?

Thanks for another great night, there have been so many!

After what Mr C said about the 'Auld Triangle/Poor Paddy' on Sunday night, did it happen again last night? It looked from where we were standing that Spider was certainly not expecting 'Auld Triangle' as an encore as Shane launched into it?

Absolutely brilliant, that was proper old school. While it didn't quite match the sentimentality I have reserved for the 2004 show, but I thought it was an improvement on last year's show.

Superb, I loved every minute. I love The Pogues.

What was the setlist?

Red Bull, not beer. For future reference, the security people in the pit are obliged to pass out water to you if you require it.

In an idea which could only have come from the mischief-making mind of Jem Finer, we decided to just start the intro and go with whichever song Shane launched into! "Poor Paddy" was on the setlist but Shane, having registered a momentary puzzlement, just moved right along to "The Auld Triangle".
