Last night! The Pogues! Amazing!
They must have performed for nearly two hours. I don't know where those old folks get their energy! James Fearnley, in particular, was just filled with life.
Shane's singing was, even after all these years of abuse, wild and brilliant. He entered the stage with a bit of guidance and a lit cigarette, which he continued to smoke as he sang. And then proceeded to consistently light up more throughout the show. He amused himself with the microphone stands and microphones a great deal--much to the chagrin of the sound techs, I'm sure. Then, occasionally, he'd wander off, another member would sing one of their songs, and he'd wander back with a new bottle of . . . well, something strong, I'm sure.
His between-songs banter was, probably needless to say, almost completely unintelligible. Well, except for this one--Shane: "Anyone here American?" [Audience responds in the affirmative.] Shane: "Fuck you!"

There were more "fucks" sprinkled here and there amongst his mumblings, along with an obligatory "Shut the fuck up!" Oh. And something about "drunk" at one point.
James running about and sliding on his knees (Who says accordion players aren't cool?!).
Spider playing percussion by means of a beer tray and his own his head.
They sang so many of their best. "Bottle of Smoke," "Streams of Whiskey," "Sally MacLennane," "The Old Main Drag," "If I Should Fall from Grace with God," "Thousands Are Sailing," "Turkish Song of the Damned," "A Pair of Brown Eyes," "The Sickbed of Cuchulainn." Wonderful encores, including a lovely version of "Fairytale of New York," complete with a large amount of falling snow and Shane shuffling the poor young-girl singer through it in an unsteady, rotating dance. And then the final, rousing "Fiesta."
I hated to see it come to an end. But alas, it did. The lads will do it all again tonight and tomorrow. I'm almost tempted to go back and see them once more, but I'll be returning to that same venue on Saturday night to see the Decemberists. I think it will take me at least that long to recover from last night's show!
