Viva Las Vegas - signed in this time

Post Tue Oct 17, 2006 10:34 pm

Wow! - what a great trip! As soon as I get myself recovered from Vegas I'll post a somewhat coherent version of the western swing road trip.

It was great to put faces to so many names - DzM, the derelicts, neilinseattle, Carmen, Lemmyts1, KathleenwithaK. satanicsurfer, Sam's Cross...

"The compliments pass when the quality meet"

A pleasure to meet all of you - hope to meet you again at a Pogues gig up here in Beautiful Vancouver, BC.

Vegas on Sunday night was pure magic!! I'm getting a lump in me throat just thinking about it. The boys took the stage - Spider looking dapper with a red flower in his lapel, and they lit the place up! The energy jumping between the band members on stage was almost visible - they were all having a great time - goofy grins and all.

Congratulations to Louise and Spider, I'll raise a glass for you both!

Vegas Show Set List - 10/14

Post Wed Oct 18, 2006 12:09 am

I had the pleasure to attend both of the Vegas shows. Here is the set list for Saturday night:

Streams of Whiskey
Fall from Grace
Broad Majestic Shannon
Turkish Song of the Damned
Ned
Brown Eyes
Boys from the County Hell
White City
Tuesday Morning
Old Main Drag
Sayonara
Repeal
Sunnyside
Body of an American
Lullaby
1000's are Sailing
Dirty Old Town
Bottle of Smoke
Sickbed

First Encore
Sally MacLennane
Rainy Night
"Dog"

Second Encore
Fairytale
Fiesta

If I recall correctly, the set list for Sunday nights show was the same. I met alot of great Pogues fans at both shows and even had the pleasure of meeting Darryl Hunt on Saturday as he was attempting to escape the House of Blues prior to the show. Both shows were outstanding! Thanks for all the great memories!!

I'm not going to get into the details of every song but I will say that Chevron was looking extremely old, Shane was extremely drunk

Between every song Shane came back on stage with a fresh gin and tonic. He was completely plastered and looked as though he was going to topple over at least a dozen times.

The highlight of the evening for me was when someone threw a half smoked lit cigarette on stage and Shane picked it up and finished it unaware of either who was smoking it or what it was :)

Pogues Show
"There'll be whiskey on Sunday and tears on her cheek"

The first question everyone asks is always "How was Shane"? He was astoundingly ambulatory. He definitely wasn't the obliterated level of drunk that people tend to fear.

It's hard to sing "questioned on his views on the crux of life's philosophies" if you can barely stand.

James Fearnly sang "Young Ned of the Hill".

Was Shane there only between the songs to make a toast and pic up old cigarettes. Are James the new lead singer

This one is rather positive :)

The Pogues at House of Blues in Las Vegas
We bought tix b/c Dirty Pretty Things were supposed to open...........Needless to say with my current luck on listening to the word on the street, they did not.

Now we had just spent $80 on a ticket to see The Pogues. i didn't even want to go now.

SOOOOOOOOOOO GLAD I DID!!

Review in a word:
The Pogues: impressive

Shane was drunk and slurring and throwing cigarettes and had a constant drink in his hand. Yet he never missed a beat during a song. The band was super tight. And however do you make an accordian look "rock and roll"? But their accordian player did it, including a jump from the drum kit. I'm so glad I saw them. They won me over. I'm now a fan.

The show on Saturday was by far one of the best shows that I have been to in years. Shane was as perfect as he could be, even with the singing the same chorus through Body of an American. The band sounded great, especially Terry and Philip when it was their time to take the mic. A girl next to me kept asking what was Shane's problem, as she couldn't understand him in between songs and kept asking me what song it was they were playing, then she said she came to the show hoping to hear Rain Street. The encores were beautiful, who was it that sang Fairytale with Shane?

Yes Canadian Steve, it was truly a pleasure to meet you as well! The Sunday show took my breath away. Being the sentimental kinda gal that I am I even wept with joy twice during the show (during Broad Majestic Shannon and then again during Rainy Night). Seriously considering Dublin now...one can dream...

I'm pretty sure that she was (and she still is) Ella Finer, Jem's daughter.

We were supposed to fly out of Las Vegas at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, and thanks to Continental Airlines, we arrived back in Florida tonight (Wed.) at 6:30 p.m. I'm too tired and angry to explain this fiasco. Very nice to see and meet all of you folks.
Well Philip, as with the NYC shows, maybe another time. Even though we didn't get to thank you personally for the after show passes, we were thoroughly entertained by our "bar buddy" Del Zamora. Some great Joe Strummer stories.
Met the whistle player too.

The House of Blues is one of my all time favorite concert venues. When I lived in Vegas, it was hands down the best place to catch a show. Its big enough to attract good touring bands, but still feels intimate. The sounds is always great, and the sightlines are fantastic. That said, they totally dropped the ball for this show. How do you book The Pogues, one of the most popular Irish bands ever, and run out of Guiness before the headliners even take the stage?

When the house lights dimmed, the opening strains of The Clash's "Straight To Hell" came flowing from the speakers, and you couldn't have asked for better intro music. After a couple of minutes, the band walked out and opened with "Streams Of Whiskey." Twenty minutes into the show, after a 1,800 person strong sing along on "Boys From County Hell," I felt like the concert could have ended right then and I'd still have got my money's worth. The fact that there was another hour and half of music after that was a bonus. I'm not sure I've ever smiled though an entire show the way I did Sunday night. After two encores, they closed with a rousing version of "Fiesta" that featured Shane MacGowan and Spider Stacy banging cookie tin lids against their heads in time with the song. It was truly an amazing show, and well worth flying half way across the country to see.

The second question anyone asks when you're talking about a Pogues show is "How was Shane?" The answer Sunday night was "fantastic." His vocals were impeccable (relatively speaking, of course), and he didn't miss a beat throughout the show. I got the impression that he was pulling Dean Martin's old routine of acting more drunk than he really was to live up to the crowd's expectations. Although Dean used to drink apple juice on stage in place of scotch, and I'm pretty sure those were real gin and tonics Shane kept walking onstage with.

Against Me opened the show with an ultra tight set of politically charged punk. I'm not usually a fan of political music, but these guys were so good they overcame my prejudices. I remember thinking that you've got to be pretty confident as a headliner to have an act this good playing before you go on. They've got several mp3s on their website, but this one seemed most appropriate to post under the circumstances.

Just back from Vegas, saw the Sunday show, just want to say 'thanks' to The Pogues once again, for making a great holiday unforgettable! The cliche about moving grown men to tears was certainly true on a couple of occasions where I was standing, or maybe that was just the price of the beer...

Sometimes a band is good enough to jump on a plane and fly somewhere to see them. When that somewhere is Vegas and the band is the Pogues then fun is guaranteed for all.

<...>

Now the question most of you might be asking here, is who the Hell are the Pogues and why are they worth flying all the way to Vegas to see?

Well, I ordinarily wouldn’t spend any time writing about a band on a travel site, but this isn’t just any band. The Pogues are an Irish band who take the quintessential elements of traditional Irish music and punk it up. It’s not every day that you see a slam-dancing mosh pit grinding away for a band that incorporates the accordion, tin flute, banjo, mandolin, saxophone, and harmonica–along with the more contemporary guitar, bass and drums. The result is a cultural explosion unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.

Lead singer Shane MacGowan, is reason enough to see the band. He is perhaps the ugliest musician in rock and roll and the drunkest - two rather extraordinary accomplishments considering the rock and roll world. He is, however, brilliant. His boozy, sped-up renditions of Irish ballads and scrappy original compositions are utterly unique. And, his alcohol-infused performances are a controlled train wreck that you just can’t look away from...
