Pogues at Vegas - 14 & 15 Oct 2006

Post Sun Oct 15, 2006 6:53 am

Hello,

I was at the first to san fran shows and I was in the front of tonights Vegas show. I think I twisted my ankle. It is quite swollen. I am going to the remaining west coast shows. Anyway, ever since Atlantic City, I have been yelling for the Boys of Kilmilcael ( sorry about spelling, I have been drinkin). Besides Phillip doing role call in 2005, hearing Shane sing this song after I called it out was t he coolest thing that ever happened to me. I will stop yelling out for this song now.

Do you want me to stop singing the Currah of Kildare before White City? I will if you guys want. They both are my favorite songs. Anyway, thanks for the West Coast tour and see you guys thru LA. I had better get some ice now

Hope your ankle is not hurt too badly. For those who are sticklers for detailed setlists, the impromptu version of "The Bicycle Michael" appeared just before "Dirty Old Town".

Amazing!!!!!

Post Mon Oct 16, 2006 5:12 pm

I went to the Saturday night show in Vegas and it was beyond words. Everyone was great, and Shane held up his part of the bargin!

I have waited for a long, long time to see a original Pogues live show, and it surpassed expectations. I just want to thank the band for playing two full hours and giving me one of the best live music perfomances I have ever seen. I only wish my 6 year old could have seen the show since she loves the band.

Good luck to Spider and his new bride!!!

Shane looked great Saturday night, dancing, moving around, even doing his best Roger Daltrey impression with his mic spinning (albeit a lot slower.) Compared to the drunken, shambling zombie I saw front the Popes in the late 90's he's definitely in great form, he's even got his scream back. 'Twas truly a great show and I definitely loved Fiesta for the last encore. Thanks guys, The Pogues are definitely back.

I had a pretty nasty hangover this morning/afternoon/ nowish but my ankle is mending nicely.

Most of the band and crew were on my flight from vegas to LAX today as well as comedian/ 70's game show icon Rip Taylor. I congradulated Spider and Louise on thier marriage.

Another reviews:

I'm not going to get into the details of every song but I will say that Chevron was looking extremely old, Shane was extremely drunk and possibly tripping and Spider Stacey got married that day.

Shane MacGowan gave a great performance. His speech between songs was slurred beyond belief but we managed to make out a few words. The crowd was ½ fans and ½ retards who decided to form into mosh pits during songs that started fast and slowed in tempo…

Between every song Shane came back on stage with a fresh gin and tonic. He was completely plastered and looked as though he was going to topple over at least a dozen times.

The highlight of the evening for me was when someone threw a half smoked lit cigarette on stage and Shane picked it up and finished it unaware of either who was smoking it or what it was :)

Every performance was great, of course I was half in the bag so I suppose anything would have sounded great. Fiesta was absolutely hilarious, Its one of my least favorite Pogues songs but Shane and Spider decided to beet themselves upon the head with cookie tins and baking sheets (apparently a tambourine was out of the question)

Pogues Show
"There'll be whiskey on Sunday and tears on her cheek"

Sunday night at the Vegas House of Blues the Pogues were completely fantastic. The first question everyone asks is always "How was Shane"? He was astoundingly ambulatory. He definitely wasn't the obliterated level of drunk that people tend to fear. He was in great voice and only made one noticeable mistake on a song, but the band was able to make up for it (he came in with the next verse in the midst of a solo). What was also nice about his performance, is he seemed to be having a good time. I'd read before that part of what led to going on stage so obliterated was that he hated touring or certain aspects of touring, but he seemed to be having fun up there. I did notice that he had an assistant that helped him through the wings of the theatre when it was time for him to go on each time. I am envious of this...boozer caddy. That's what I needed most the time in Vegas.

The audience was completely into it, even with the outrageously priced booze (more on that in a bit). The band started with "Streams of Whiskey" which is a great song to both get the crowd bouncing and also drinking, and further goes to show Shane's good form. It's hard to sing "questioned on his views on the crux of life's philosophies" if you can barely stand.

The band spelled Shane by occasionally playing tunes he doesn't sing on. James Fearnly sang "Young Ned of the Hill". There was one instrumental, and the band also did "Tuesday Morning" which is one of the few songs they recorded without Shane that I really liked.

They closed with "Fiesta" which isn't one of my favorites, but saying "least favorite Pogues song" is similar to "least enjoyable orgasm."

The only complaint about the show would have to be the venue. The House of Blues sucks. The drinks were nine bucks a piece. Which in a town where you're regularly drinking for free and the rest of the time the booze tends to be very inexpensive, really stands out. They also didn't have any Irish whiskey. Nevermind the fact that they're apparently the only bar around that doesn't stock it, shouldn't someone look at the fact that the Pogues are playing and think they might want to have some available?

Still, great show. I was buzzed through into the morning. I woke up early and found I was still too thrilled to go back to sleep.

The Vegas Shows

Post Tue Oct 17, 2006 4:16 pm

We were at both Las Vegas shows and they were freakin' sweet!! For my money, Saturday was a better show for the band- they seemed to have more energy and Shane threw in more impromptu singing/ sidenotes. But the crowd was better on Sunday.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Sunday was sold out, but Saturday was not. There was still quite a crowd on Saturday, though.

We spoke to Darryl on Saturday and he was planning to walk to the Bellagio to see the fountains before the show. That's quite a walk. It's 5 hotels away but it's farther than it looks in Vegas. Never did hear if he made it or gave up.

We got upstairs to the afterparty Sunday night but the band never showed. Can't blame them after Spider's wedding and all- they were probably tired. It would have been great to meet the boys and thank them for everything.

I can die now. :D And thanks to Phil for the afterparty passes!!

Vegas Sunday Night

Post Tue Oct 17, 2006 7:16 pm

I now regret not seeing both Vegas shows (and I live in Vegas!!!) as the show I went to was one of the funnest shows I've ever been to. My legs still hurt now 2 days afterwards from jumping so much. I must say that Pogues fans are a rowdy bunch, who arent afraid to lock arms and dance like the drunken fools they are, and thats not a bad thing. God, I hope they come back through the states, especially Las Vegas. Vegas seemed to be pretty kind to the band both in spirit, and in ticket sales. In the LV Weekley interview with Spyder, he says that there's more touring plans in the works. I sure hope so. I still regret not seeing them both nights, they were amazing. If you have a chane to see them, don't pass it up.

Also, if you passed on the merchandise at any of the shows, buy the stuff online. Shirts at the shows were 30, and are 16 online through the official Pogues store. Actually, all of the merchandise is substantially less.
