POGUES at the FILLMORE - 9-12 Oct 2006

Post Tue Oct 10, 2006 7:02 am

Well, it was the Fillmore West when I used to read about it in the NME as a boy - an impossibly exotic place, home to the Byrds, Sir Douglas Quintet, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Led Zeppelin, Country Joe and the Fish, the Lovin' Spoonful, Jefferson Airplane and on and on. You could positively SMELL the patchouli oil and hash just by reading about the place. Well, the music business has become more business, less music since then, but the Fillmore still lives and breathes rock and roll, if nothing else, when it gets the right combination of band and audience, and tonight, San Francisco, you rocked. Before "1000s" I said "last time we played San Francisco, George Burns was still alive" which is true. I also said that Irving Berlin was still alive, which was not true, though he was still alive the FIRST time we played the Fillmore.

Thank You Gentlemen!!! - the show was one for the ages

Post Tue Oct 10, 2006 7:24 am

How gracious of you to thank us, Philip.
It was wonderul to bask in the glory of this band tonight. You were all seemingly at the height of your collective power. As good as could possibly be expected, and more! You are spot on about the communion between crowd and band tonight as well. I though St. Patricks Day in NYC was something special, but this took the cake. I met another girl in the audience who saw both shows and agreed. It was heartening to see you all looking and sounding so well, clearly enjoying yourselves. It gives me hope we will see you again. down the road. There shall never be another Pogues. Amen.

Pogues opening night at the Fillmore

Post Tue Oct 10, 2006 1:00 pm

The boys sounded perfect, and the friendly crowd was energized--dancing and singing along loudly in the front. It's great to see everyone in the band looking good, and Shane was in fine fettle--he seemed responsive to the crowd, and his voice sounded pretty good!

What else can I say except that the sound of the Pogues live is a beautiful thing! I'll be back Thursday night, if not sooner!

I got to the Fillmore early and was able to get great seats in the balcony. Much more comfortable than front and center barricade in New York on St. Paddy's day. Phil, thanks for coming through for me with the after-show passes. I chatted briefly with Andrew and found Ella completely charming. Hope she remembers to give you the candy I sent. The show was fantastic and the crowd was clearly loving every minute of it. How do you handle such devotion? Nearly everyone I spoke to was returning for more this week. I met a couple of fellows at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival over the weekend who had flown in from Newfoundland to catch three nights. Hope the Blue Angels didn't keep you from some much need rest. I'll be back for more on Wednesday. Ta!

Monday, October 9 - highlights

Post Tue Oct 10, 2006 11:07 pm

Last night's opening night at the Fillmore was, in my opinion, better than any of the NYC and Boston gigs, which I was lucky to see. Way cooler/more intimate venue, higher energy from the crowd, and more inbetween banter from the band. (and free posters!!!!!!)

Not to mention, "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)" and the Instrumental Happy Birthday were fine touches!

Oh, yeah... and the new posters for sale are exquisite! And, did I mention the the free posters!!!!????!!!!!

Wow - the Pogues just seem to be getting better and better and better.

Other Highlights:

* Shane addressing the crowd (the USA as a whole, I assume) "Murdering Faggots"
* Spider and Shane's call and response / echo song intros
* Watching Phil smoke a cigerette while leaning against the speaker watching Shane belt out "Old Main Drag"
* Both Phil and Terry's shoes (my wife had to point those out to me)
* James leaping with the accordian
* Shane twirling the mic during "Streams of Whiskey" ala Roger Daltry, yet not quite
* "Bottle of Smoke", "White City", "IISFFGWG", "Fiesta"
* the free posters!!!!!

What a night!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait for the next three.

Hmmm, Star of the County Down and Rain Street replaced with Boys From The County Hell and Pair of Brown Eyes (this is compared to the Brixton gigs last year btw). Also no 'Boys of Kilmichael' which must have been replaced with a deserved rest for the band :D

I think the two main swaps are good moves actually... would be delighted if this was what they play in Brixton, but as Phillip already said - it's down to what the band enjoy playing (rightly so) so perhaps the next few gigs will see a change in the setlist...

Pogues San Francisco show

Post Tue Oct 10, 2006 11:46 pm

Great show at the Fillmore last night-about 2 hours. Shane's singing voice was fine but his between song talk was unintelligible and he moves like a 70 year old. My brother caught the tray Spider uses as percussion on his head, I am looking for a proper display for it.
