I feel sorry for Mr. Christopher Porter, and even sorrier for the Pogues fan who didn’t get to see the sold out show because Mr. Porter’s waste of space stood in the crowd in their place.

Someone should tell Mr. Porter that not everyone runs off to the gym to spend their days guzzling Perrier and working out the minute they turn 35. And not everyone dashes off the plastic surgeon the moment their face shows it’s first sign of age, either, (thankfully). Shane has a beautiful face, and anyone who looks with their heart and not their own insecure ego can see that plain as day. Anyone who looks at Shane and sees what Mr. Porter saw should give their Pogues ticket to someone worthy and then go see a Celine Dion concert.

Yes, we saw Shane throw at least a ½ bottle of whiskey down his face, and that’s not counting what he drank before the show and backstage during the songs he sat out. Yes, Shane drinks and drinking takes it’s toll on a body. But anyone who knows anything knows that’s part of who he is. Which is why seeing him hang in there all night was so fucking special. I don’t think I was the only one whose heart dropped when Shane walked off stage after the 3rd song of the set - Broad Majestic Shannon. Time was when that would’ve been all the Shane we got. But he only sat out 1 song and then he was back. And he kept coming back all the way to the last encore. I for one felt grateful that I was there to witness it. And not just Shane, the entire band was in top form that night, looking dapper and singing and playing their hearts out.

How could Mr. Porter have stood in that room and then wrote such a review, at least half of which was about how Shane looked? What, did he expect the young Shane of the 80’s? Perhaps Mr. Porter needs to be reminded what year it is. Did he not see the smiles on the faces of 1200 people who were all thrilled to be there? Did he not notice the fact that the music was beautiful, joyful, heart wrenching, and fucking rocking? Oh, that’s right. Mr. Porter only heard garbles and slurs. Perhaps that is because he didn’t understand WHAT he was hearing.

Just on a point of order, Mr Mac has developed a fondness for fine Rose Wines lately. It is NOT whiskey.

Porter is a moron. I was at the show he reviewed. In fact, I was at both of the DC shows. On Thursday night, Shane sang with passion and reverance. This was true of all of the songs, especially the ballads. It was astounding. I never heard Shane sing so well and sincerely. Friday night, Shane was obviously much drunker and sang in a very cynical and sardonic tone. It was pretty comical, but very different from the night before. I'm glad I got to go to both shows. To see the two sides of Shane in 24 hours was quite interesting. Thursday was like heaven and Friday was like hell, but both were wonderful experiences. Porter probably went home after Thursdays show and jerked off to Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, The White Stripes and The Artic Monkeys-all mediocre acts hyped by the media. The music industry has got the press in their pockets. They are desperate to sell records, even if they suck. The Pogues don't sell well to this empty culture. An idiot like Porter is simply a slave to the times.

 that made me laugh

Five of us were at the show in DC on Thursday and we all thought Shane was brilliant, as was the rest of the band, and the audience. Shane appeared to be enjoying himself immensly as well, especially after both he and the audience got warmed up. Even my uber-critical friend who almost never approves of a show he sees was totally mezmorized.

Well the Friday show at the 9:30 Club could not have been better. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Started off at DC9 for some $2 Schlitz beers and shots. Place was empty for a bit, then filled up with Pogues fans. Great spot for a few drinks before any 9:30 Club show and they have the Pogues on the jukebox. Quick walk across the street and your at the 9:30.

Entered the 9:30 towards the end of WEW set. He seemed to have some fans there but people were getting ready to hear some Pogues. We had a great spot by the bar and close to the stage. The service at the bar was fast too. Had some more beers and shots. Sang some songs, met some great people and had alot of fun. Rest of night is a blur. Heard there were bubbles coming down for Fairytale of NY. Crowd was great and the band sounded awesome. Thanks for a great night.

Bubbles yes......or Snow if you use your imagination. In Atlantic City we had white and green glittery confetti......or Snow if we used our imagination. But I liked the green touch.

I remember the Pogues show in NYC at the Ritz (the original location) around 1987 where Joe Strummer took over for Phil while he was recovering from an illness up in Canada?? I seem to remember trivial things like that. Anyway, I remembered Shane nursing a large bottle of Rose that night. I don't recall too often seeing Shane drink whiskey, unless it's in one of those plastic cups he holds. I see him drinking wine and Gin as you can see on his IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE dvd. I don't think he drinks Ginness either, unless it's the only choice around. OK...enough of this BLAH BLAH BLAH!! :?

Two schools of thought regarding the review:
The recent Boston Globe feature headline undoubtedly prompted all U.S. concert reviews to somehow surpass the Globe's kicker line, which stated: "After years of hard living, Shane MacGowan of the Pogues should really be dead."
With that being said, I don't believe Mr. Porter read the full text of the Globe feature.
Reporter 2 will never read past the "nut graph" of Reporter 1's story so he/she doesn't end up in the blurred realm of a Joe Biden presidential campaign. i.e. plagiarism

Secondly,
Before we rake Mr. Porter over the coals and back again, my thoughts fall upon the story editing. Shock value sells papers (yes, even in the distinguished W.Post).
Often, reporter observation at the end of a story catches the eye of an editor on the tailend of a bender. The reporter awakens the next morning to find his story rewritten. This is known as "reporter curse" - an 18 inch story when you go to bed but by the time you wake up, it's three inches and unrecognizable.

Sound familiar to anyone?
