There I was, in shorts and a t-shirt, chnating Ella Ella Ella ..... admiring her in the duet of FONY (she does a great job) when to my amazement it starts to SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Christ, what a surprise. I mean really. I was sure they would not have snow. I turned to a good friend who was just behind me down in front, and said "class". For a good four minutes I was actually in a snow globe.

Glonn,
Was that you I saw in the back writing down the setlist?

My compliments to Ella Finer. Your future's looking bright...

And of course the other members were awesome too. During The Sickbed of Cuchulainn, all of them except for Rankin moved up to the front of the stage and just blew it up to higher proportions.

After the show, I spent about an hour trying to remember what street I'd parked my car on. I checked all the streets within about a mile area in a comepletely wrong direction, twice even! :x Luckily I'd brought a skateboard with me and was able to cover a lot of ground with minimal effort.

Just before it, as there was a brief quiet period, I yelled out "My name is MacRua and I don't give a fuck about your rules." I was just about dead center, about 8 people back from the stage. Shane said "Shut up!" And then belted out Brown Eyes. It was pure magic. :D

Thanks for two seconds of great publicity

I wanted to yell it, but couldn't find a suitable pause. So instead, after hearing someone mention something about a "freebird", I yelled out "Waxie's Dargle!". Those people didn't seem to get the joke though. Plus it was off-sinque with the pause (which is probably good, because I don't really want the song to have the connotation for such a reputation).

Really great show.

3/9 musings

Post Fri Mar 10, 2006 2:47 pm

Hello my new friends, back to work on a Friday mornin that, against all predictions, is beautiful - not only is it 65 degrees at 9:30 am, but the sunny feeling is coming from within as strong as the sun is shining down. Despite having had more than my fair share of drinks last night, I'm fresh as a daisy and still feeling the happy vibe of the show.

Arrived @ 10:20 to find the line around the corner - never have I seen this @ the 9:30 Club - must've been due to the fact of an earlier show that had to be cleared out. The buzz in line was happy anticipation fueled by the unusually warm temperature outside (somewhere around 60! Egads - it IS March after all). The line moved quickly and we were in in plenty of time to go to the downstairs bar and secure a couple bottles then up to the floor which was tightly packed but we were able to work our way to somewhere around 50' from the stage.

The boys came on @ 11:10, thank goodness as it was a Thursday night with Friday am staring us down. Shane had a bottle of something brown that was already 2/3 gone, which may have knocked another man down a few notches, but was about perfect for him - he sang bloody well and hung in there, only to step offstage for three (not concurrent) numbers. Wonderfull playing throughout - the band sounded comfortable and seemed to be enjoying themseves.

The crowd was appropriately rowdy, singing along and swaying with the songs, but no jerks. Good time had by all.

I've been a casual fan since the mid 80's - played 'em a bunch on the college radio I DJ'd at - but never saw a show until last night. I'm glad I did - one for the ages.

I'll be heading out in just a cpl of hours to drive to the east coast for the AC show tomorrow night. I've been a Pogues fan for as long as I can remember hearing them. My daughter is named Lorelei, even. The one thing I never got to do was see the band live. Well, only one more night to go and the set-list posted here couldn't be better. Thanks again guys, for U.S. tour. We've waited a long time for it but I have a feeling those years will be long forgotten after tomorrow night (for me anyway).

Here's a little more about last night:

Shane-
Everybody's favorite topic. I saw him arrive at the 9:30 an hour and a half before the show and he had to be pushed up a loading dock ramp lest he stop mid-ramp or even come tumbling down from it. That was a little sad to see. I was feeling sorry for him up until the band took the stage. At that point Shane was at home and besides looking great (skinnier than recent photos suggest, and well dressed in black w/ untied tie around his neck and his soon to be trademark hat) he sounded better and performed beyond expectations. A verse or two was misplaced but overall the stumbles were rare and inconsequential. Old Main Drag was his vocal highlight of the night. His drinks of choice last night were a bottle of Berringer white zinfandel and a tall glass of some clear liquid with crushed ice. FYI, all of the other water came in plastic bottles. One of Mac's funnier moments was when Joey Cashman escorted Shane back to the stage after one of his breaks. Cashman was met with heaps of verbal abuse from the crowd to which Shane responded "Shut Up!". Classic.

Phillip-
Since joining this forum I have become a big fan of Phil's for his dedication to his fans and his intelligent observations. After last night I am even more impressed, now with his musicianship and his spirit. He is the unofficial Pogues cheerleader, encouraging the crowd to clap and shout and generally keeping things lively on stage. I noticed that he very subtly keeps Mac in line with the lyrics. When his guitar and voice were not needed (such as during the Old Main Drag) Phil would quietly sit at the side of the stage and very intently listen to the singing and playing. Finally, his guitarwork was very crisp and startegic. What a professional.

The rest of the Band-
All very impressive. Terry is a great player and almost in his own little word as he does his thing on stage. James is fantastic to watch play. He occupies a lot of territory on stage, from stage right to left, and from on his knees to flying around in the air. One persoanl thing that I couldn't stop observing was the fact that he does not use the bass buttons on the accordian. This, of course, has been pointed out by James himself and Mac in his book. For whatever reason I kept on wishing that he would play them. I am a freak. Spider was awesome, even stone cold sober that guy has mischief in his eyes all the time and provides a combination of great whistle playing and enjoyable antics. His beer tray during Fiesta was superb. The rest of the boys were a little out of my line of sight but they definitely pulled their weight.

The Crowd-
A typically subdued DC crowd in the line to get into the club and up until the pre-show music got to (The Dubliners?) Dirty Old Town at which ponit we livened up, singing along and clapping. As the set commenced and progressd the energy kept building up to the point where The Pogues verion of Dirty Old Town was accompanied by slam dancing. Crazy. The sobriety level definitely plummeted during the show. 9:30 must have made a killing. I expect an even more raucus crowd tonight.

I am sure that there is more to write but that's all that I have got now. Once again I would like to thank all of the Pogues, Ella, the crew and family members for making the trip to play for us. Sure, we are travelling and paying for tickets but it is comparatively easy for us to do such things. Seeing you all play last night has really made several hundred people happier than they have been in years. I hope that you all know how much it means to us.

P.S.-It is sunny here and the high temp will top out in the 70's. Meanwhile, Toronto is looking at a high of 47 and rainy. Pogues, you picked the perfect place to kick things off. Get some sun.

Glonn -- I don't know about you, but for the first few songs I had an strange feeling at times like the band was a little uneasy with what must be a totally different crowd than they are use to playing to as the Pogues for teh past few years. I posted elsewhere that to some extent this crowd was in fact mesmorized for the first few songs and I think awe-struck is a good description as well. At any rate, things picked up where I was when some moderately intoxicated guys started waving an Irish flag IMMEDIATELY in front of me, blocking our view. Fortunately they spilled over to my right and the flag ended up on stage with my friend's watch (Spider -- he said its only worth 15 bucks so you can keep it). Thisngs went pleasently nuts after that, and the "moshing" or "slamming" or "pogoing" or "dancing" of whatever you might call it was great fun.
