Manchester Mix up

Post Sun Dec 18, 2005 4:11 pm

From a bloke who ranks the LPs in the order in which they were released as Good to bad (Bad being a relative term) I was a bit downbeat about last night.

No Pair of Brown Eyes, No Dark Strrets of London, No Kitty, No Galway Races and No Birmingham Six. Thousand Ships Sailing was a good addition tho.

Perhaps it is the Irish slant in me that prefers this type of song?

Not a criticism, the night was still a good un but I think that it could have been better.

Would I be right in saying that the majority of the core who go to see them would be 35+ and therefore might have prefered the classic stuff?

I see your point about some of the songs that were left out, but they didn't play Kitty or Birmingham 6 last year either.

I also think the new songs included were just as good. The likes of Sayonara and Sunnyside of the street were excellent.

Strangley enough I agree with you about the "newer" tracks. THe one I woke up whistling to this morning was Sayonora, a song that I have rated in the context of the Pogues as Average previously.

I had a similar Road to Damascus experience with Body of an American last year.

I have to hear Kitty live before I die. Can we start a petition (Philip, are you listening?)

I've only been a Pogues fan for about a year now, and last night was the first time I'd seen them live. Absolutley loved it! Took my brother along, who other than Fairytale wasn't a great fan of The Pogues but we both left agreeing we'll be back for more. 8)

Just got home from Manchester, great show, thought Mac played a blinder. Great to hear Sayonara. Still disappointed that there were no 'surprises' thrown in i.e. old classics such as Dark Streets of London, Transmetroploitan, Kitty, Rec' Sargent, Rocky Road and Galway Races medley.
Terry, time to drop Yound Ned....stick Rainbow Man in....listened to it on the way home, superb song!

Dropkicks....fucking awesome opening act!

Managed to keep the kilt on....even got some wolf whistles lol  Nice to chat too a few folks off here and even some strangers from Sweden and Norway...great folks!

My biggest disappointment was the merchandice. (This is only my opinion so don't chastise me too much) but I thought the designs and selection were poor and prices were high . £20 for a ski hat!!!!!

But apart from that is twas a fantasic night!

To the Pogues, thanks for a great weekend!

To be fair the merchandise at the M.E.N arena and probably all big places is expensive whenever I've been. I believe the arena takes a cut?

I thought the black Boys from the County Hell T shirt with the tour dates was nice, so bought it :) and the poster.

Happily, I also thought Shane was on good form last night. And I agree Sayonara is a great song and it was good to hear that live too. Gotta keep Young Ned in though, its a classic!

And to the guy who wanted the more slow pace stuff..the crowd went mad for the fast paced stuff so I think it was well balanced[/i]

'fatbloke' were you wearing a green kilt? I remember seeing a chap in a green kilt and possibly a green t shirt near the merchandise stall at one point.

First time I've seen you lot play when I was sober, having seen you twice at Leeds Uni in the early 90's..

Great show, musically superb, great mix of songs and tempo's.

Brilliant mix of people there even the drunk woman who nearly fell from Row V to the stage she was so unsteady.

Shane got much better towards the end, having started well trying to wash the stage after 3 minutes.

Was it deliberate to interrupt Darryl every time he spoke!!

Thought Shane moved up a gear from Dirty Old Town onwards. I know some people thought Ella Finer was good but for me I didn't think she was interested, just doing a job, maybe I'm wrong. The rest of the band, brilliant as usual. Was going to get a bob hat till I saw the price, £20, a joke.
