Just back or 'newydd ddod nol' as we say in these parts.
It's the fourth time I've seen them (though never back 'in the day' unfortunately) - London Fleadh (when Strummer was support), Manchester last year, the Guilfest and now in my home town.
I have to say it started a bit ropey - Shane was off the beat, unable to keep up and generally just making a noise for probably the first five or six songs he performed. I was there with friends I'd persuaded to come and was a bit apologetic.
Then he somehow just got better and better (and the band were very tight throughout - Spider sand well Tuesday Morning, Phillip's Thousands Were Sailing was faultless) not just the slower songs (that I'd heard him perform well before) but the fast ones too. Dirty Old Town along with c.7000 Welsh backing voices brought the roof down and they got into the groove.
Shane shouted out "Iechyd Da" (Good health) along with the customary cackle, Spider asked what "Merry Christmas" was in Welsh, Darryl asked people to stop throwing the plastic glasses or someone 'would lose an eye lash'.
A few songs from Hell's Ditch and Peace and Love and no Pair of Brown Eyes or Rainy Night in Soho was surprising but it was good to have a change from some of the regulars.
Cerys Matthews and Shane were wonderful for Fairytale - made my night.
Guessing at the set list (apologies but I'm rubbish at remembering so I wouldn't take it as being definitive) - it's not complete and in no particular order:
Streams of Whiskey
If I should fall form Grace
The sick bed of Cuchulainn
Misty Morning Albert Bridge
White City
Tuesday Morning
Thousands are Sailing
Broad Majestic Shannon
Irish Rover
Sally MacLennane
Sunnyside of the street
Dirty old town (Shane dedicated it to Kirsty)
Young ned on the Hill
Dark Streets of London (I think)
Turkish Song of the Damned
Star of the County Down
One of the fast instrumentals with Spider leading on tin whistle (Dingle Regatta?)
Bottle of Smoke (wasn't far off the CD!)
Fairytale
Fiesta
All in all it was a bloody good night and it was great to see the Pogues in Wales and they all looked to be enjoying themselves too - Terry Woods and james were jumping all over the place and Phillip was going for it (and of course Spider got the tray out for Fiesta).
Fantastic.
Diolch yn fawr i'r Pogues.
