got back from London on Wednesday and finally read through all the new topics...

The concert was absolutely fantastic and I would fly up to England for a concert anyday again!
Since I hadn't seen a Pogues or Shane show before I cannot draw any comparisions. For the first three or four songs I thought Shane seemed quite drunk, yet he seemed very animated and into it. I don't know about other recent concerts (solo and pogues). Was he in a comparably good or bad shape? Of course, it doesn't matter at all because he was incredibly entertaining. (Wasn't he doing some kind of Hitler impersonation at some point?) and his fooling around with Spider was great.
I just wish the lightning guy wouldn't have left some of the others (Mr Woods and Jem Finer especially) in darkness for most of the time. No need to hide their huge talent! And James' accordian playing was simply incredible!
I had hoped that I could gain some insight into your rhythm guitar style, Mr Chevron, but I still can't quite figure out your right hand technique.

anyway, setlist-wise I think the encores were Star of the County Down, Rainy Night in Soho and Fiesta with Irish Rover ending the main set?

I enjoyed some of the other acts such as the Stands, Big Wednesday or This is Seb Clarke. Having said that, I thought that Alabama 3 were a bizarre choice for a festival although lots of people seemed to love them. The Twelve Sullivans seemed okay when I saw them but after the Pogues I couldn't even remember their name.

and what about your wimpy English beer?

It's probably not what your use to but the beer was either French (Kroenberg) or Austrailian (Fosters) and quite watered down only had a few Pints, so I moved though Strongbow s for a few hours which wasn't cold enough so I selted on Sprits up untill The Pogues came on, I think Shane was on better form at Guilfest, then the last time I saw him (Paddys Day) which I thought was good, but he had better musicans with him this time.

.... The Pogues couldn’t have played anywhere else but the top of the bill -not just because their legendary status, but also because playing last allowed the crowd enough time at the bar to enjoy their reeling jigs and heartfelt ballads in an appropriately convivial mood. With a all key members on board - including Spider Stacy, Phillip Chevron and the infamous Shane McGowan - The Pogues took the stage and launched themselves head first into kerosene-fuelled versions of classics like “Tuesday Morning” and “Streams Of Whiskey”, a sharp reminder of why folk music, played with punk attitude, has all the incendiary force of its spiky-haired sibling.

Since his original departure from the fold in 1991, Shane has never been able to fully sever his ties with the group, returning a decade later for Christmas shows and again in 2004, these gigs apparently inspiring a renewed – ahem - thirst for performance. Shane’s performance on this occasion was captivating, in a very literal sense. Try as you might to avert your gaze from this wreck of a man, a man that in all other walks of life would surely have been written off an age ago, he remains the most interesting thing on stage. Blind drunk, disheveled and absolutely incoherent, his between song spiels should have come with subtitles. His stumbling delivery and whisky soaked inflections were sublime in their folly, and on the numbers that Chevron sung in his absence (presumably exiting to refresh his glass), his uniquely exuberant presence was sorely missed ...

geographical correction

ooh just noticed reference to the 'London' show this summer on the front page. Guildford is 20 / 30 miles outside of London in the county of Surrey. Surrey residents would be outraged to hear themselves described as London!!

I am looking forward to the numerous posts from Guildford residents:

PLEASE DO NOT CALL GUILDFORD LONDON! IT IS NOT!

STOP WITH THE LONDON! WE ARE GUILDFORD!

WE LOVE THE POGUES, BUT WE ARE NOT LONDON! UP GUILDFORD!

Etc...

They haven't actually happened just yet. That's why I'm looking forward to them rather than remembering them fondly.

Mayor of Guildford

Post Tue Sep 20, 2005 11:51 am

Sir,

As the Mayor of Guildfor, I am bound to inform you that Guildford is not a part of London. Please do not call Guildford London. It is not. Stop with the London. We are Guildford. In Surrey. Here in Guildford we appreciate that a Californian peering confusedly at his map of olde England might find it hard to discern the 'state line,' so to be clear it is as correct to state that Guildford is in London as it woud be to state that Las Vegas is in California. In both cases a few dozen miles and a major border separate the two.

Up Guildford!

Come visit our lovely city.

8)
