Leeds 14 Dec

Post Tue Dec 15, 2009 2:06 pm

I had a great time at the gig in Leeds last night. Can anyone tell me if that was Ella Finer singing on Fairytale? Also, I wrote down a set list, but I don't have the order right and I think I've missed out a couple of the instrumental songs. Can anyone help me correct it?

Streams of Whiskey
The Boys From County Hell
Dark Streets of London
Tuesday Morning
Greenland Whale Fisheries
Kitty
The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn
The Old Main Drag
A Pair of Brown Eyes
Sally MacLennane
Dirty Old Town
Thousands Are Sailing
The Broad Majestic Shannon
If I should Fall From Grace With God
Bottle of Smoke
Lullaby of London
Body of an American
The Sunny Side of the Street
The Irish Rover
A Rainy Night in Soho
Fairytale of New York
Fiesta

Ella Finer holds down the "Fairytale" spot on a more-or-less permanent basis now, for as long as she wants it, in any case.

Here's the set:

1. Streams of whiskey
2. If I should fall from grace with god
3. Broad majestic shannon
4. Boys from the county hell
5. Pair of brown eyes
6. Tuesday morning
7. Kitty
8. Sunnyside of the street
9. Repeal of the licensing laws
10. The old main drag
11. Greenland whale fisheries
12. Metropolis
13. Lullaby of london
14. Body of an american
15. 1000's are sailing
16. Dirty old town
17. Bottle of smoke
18. Sickbed of cuchulainn

19. Sally Maclennane
20. Rainy night in soho
21. Irish Rover

22. Star of the county down
23. Fairytale of new york
24. Fiesta

We didn't play Dark Streets.

The night before, after the Manchester show, Ryan Giggs appeared in our hotel bar after the show. He had just come back from Sheffield where he had won the BBC's Sportsman of the Year award in recognition of his 20 years in first flight football [that's football played with feet, not hands, colonials, though Thierry Henry has not yet quite grasped this concept]. Naturally, none of the actual Manchester United fans in our organisation were present for this apparition - someone phoned Jem, but he apparently thought it was "a wind up", understandably locating Mr Giggs in Sheffield at the time of the crime - and just as naturally, it seems that Shane and his driver Brendan ended up in a nightclub with Giggsy. A very decorous nightclub but a nightclub all the same.

And said Giggsy is now apparently missing his club's next match with a "hamstring strain". Suspicious, eh? However decorous the nightclub may have been, presumably there was riotous dancing?

Are you suggesting that Giggsy and Shane tripped the light fantastic together when FoNY came on [which it did]? If Shane hasn't managed to fell Ella Finer yet, I think Ryan's relatively safe.

On the other hand, Giggsy should probably consider himself fortunate he's not lost in Salford.

That picture would have been something for the tabloids, Shane walzing with Giggsy :D  I would pay to see that. (Shane is much bigger star than Giggsy)

Yes, I think Giggsy could probably keep his feet while dancing with Shane. Unlike some of his colleagues, who would execute a graceful dive across the dance floor at the slightest hint of bodily contact.

I'm just a tad concerned that if there's any suggestion that The Pogues could in some way be responsible for Giggsy's injury, they could be liable to the Wrath of Fergie. [Note for American readers: "Fergie" here refers to the famously fearsome and purple-faced manager of Giggsy's soccer club. Who probably doesn't read these boards, so it should be ok. "Fergie" in this instance does not refer to the famously famous and red-headed former spouse of some member of the British royal family, who of course is a regular reader of Medusa.]
